MLS is making an announcement in Nashville. More than likely confirming an expansion team there in the coming years. I'll keep this updated.

Living in Nashville, this is awesome

It's official now. Nashville will be the 24th MLS team.
They've come out of nowhere in the past several months to win the bid.

Well, soccer comes to Nashvegas. The Fairgrounds will be missed. No more flea markets! Thank you, MLS!

Best city to have an expansion team
Posted on 12/20/17 at 4:33 pm to BestBanker
They didn't say anything about a date for joining the league. Most estimates I have seen have 2020, but I guess it'll be whenever the stadium is finished or maybe they'll play in a football stadium for a bit like Atlanta United did this year. Congrats to Nashville!
The question is now who will get that second expansion spot. I doubt Detroit, and it seems Beckham's Miami franchise still doesn't have its act together. Likely either Cincinnati or Sacramento, and I expect Cincy to get the nod, especially since it looks like the Crew are leaving Ohio. We'll see. I think Nashville surprised a lot of people.
Maybe the league will throw a curveball and let both in, or even Detroit, too. It could put the league in an awkward spot where they owe Beckham a ton of money if his Miami bid isn't eventually approved.

I LOVE the Nashville flea markets

I love the stadium plan. Over 27K seats right near Downtown. Perfect for MLS 3.0.
I hope NYCFC and New England will eventually get their own stadiums, but I'm not holding my breath anytime soon.

Met Don Garber at the announcement, and he told me “I want you to remember this moment in the future. When you’re pissed off at the league, I want you to remember this moment.”
Literally the most Don Garber-like thing he could have said.

LOL. Kind of an odd thing to say.
You ask him about the Crew?

No, but I did see a couple of people with Crew scarves tonight.

It was a pretty big turnout, though maybe it just seemed that way as they herded us into the tiny country music hall of fame, while there were massive convention center spaces available just outside at MCC.

Finally, a 2nd MLS team in the south.

So since Ingram owns Nashville SC, is the general consensus thought that NSC will step up into MLS after a short USL stint? Or is it going to be a new club altogether?
I only ask because I was surfing NSC’s website and their season ticket holders get first priority in MLS ticket sales once they become available...
I am unfamiliar with the level of talent in the USL vs MLS, but it seems like it wouldn’t be the same and Nashville SC would get trounced into oblivion if they stepped into the MLS fray. Am I off-Base in that thought process?

quote:Somewhat. They may keep a few USL players, but 90% of the team will be new to the team their 1st year in MLS. They will still have the expansion draft, 1st pick in the SuperDraft, a lot more TAM/GAM/etc. than the rest of the league that they could get players/trade for players with.
Am I off-Base in that thought process?
They can also go on and work on an academy and get some homegrown players by time they start MLS.

Alright, here’s a little FAQ based on what I’ve seen asked on various forums:
What will the team be called?
All signs indicate that the MLS team will be called Nashville SC. Mark Ingram has stated that he would leave it up to the fans, and there may be a vote of some kind for season ticket holders, and current NSC board of directors. This leads me to indicate that the name will remain Nashville SC. We’re not going to be named Tenn SC, or Hot Chicken FC, or whatever other absurdities you may have seen on twitter.
What will the colors be?
If the MLS team remains named Nashville SC, we will wear blue and gold.
Does the team have a nickname?
Not officially, but ‘The Villans’ is starting to gain a lot of traction.
When will the team play in MLS?
Either 2019 or 2020. Exact year has yet to be determined.
Is there a supporter’s group?
There are two main ones at this point in time. The Roadies, and The Assembly.
Will there still be a USL team associated with the MLS team?
Ingram has said that he wants to operate an MLS and USL team in order ensure proper development. Similar to what Sounders has with S2, Timbers with T2, Orlando City with OCB, etc. Details as to what that means for Nashville SC will come much later down the road.
Where will the team play?
The USL team will play their first inaugural season at First Tennessee Park, where the minor league baseball team Nashville Sounds play. The MLS team, when they start, will either play at Nissan Stadium or Vanderbilt’s football stadium while the new soccer specific stadium is being built.
Will the same players on the USL team play for the MLS team?
Maybe a few. But probably not. A good example would be to look at how Orlando City handled the transition from USL to MLS 4 years ago.

Thanks, fellas!
I am pretty excited for this, so I definitely need to brush up a great deal more on the inner workings/processes of expansion for MLS.
