If he played they would have gotten their arse beat, he went out France players thought we got this and relaxed, and WTF they were doing in OT is beyond me. 30 seconds before the game winning goal, I am yelling at TV in the Bar. What are they all doing just standing around no one is attacking the ball, they are about to give up a shot. ( I have seen it 1000x times in club play, and high school. This year with 15 seconds left in OT)
Ronaldo is too much of an a-hole to be taken seriously. Any team that is out manned plays this way. We have lost plenty of games after having the ball 80% of the time and out shouting the other guys 10-20 to won. Lost one once in shoot out after giving up no shots on goal or shots period once and missing over 60. Stopped 3 out of 5 in SO too, still lost. This is nature of the game, U have to put ball in the net, just like basketball, some times u r just off.

He certainly went up in my estimation with the fight and emotion he showed in that final.
His comments were somewhat hypocritical, certainly, but there's a big difference between playing for a draw in a group match and doing whatever you have to do to win a final when your best player is out.

1. Iceland has 350,000 people. They have a very small pool from which to select a team. Their run was a testimony to coaching and good team play.
2. Ronaldo is not the coach of Portugal. The coach didn't make those comments. He understands the game.
