Kinda new to the soccer board but I have pretty strong opinions on this. I want to know where the girls stand on title IX and college soccer scholarships since they all got a free ride to play in college. I had to use half an academic scholarship because of my gender. I also was limited on where I could play because title IX. There are only 198 division 1 men’s soccer teams compared to 320 women’s teams. And it gets worse. Women’s teams get to split 14 schollys and men only get 9. That’s a disparity of 4,480 to 1,782 scholarships available just for D1. Where you at USWNT? Still fighting for equality?

Well it’s because football eats up so many that it’s like that

Obviously but how is that fair to men’s soccer players? Does that even make sense to have less kids earn scholarships to college in the name of equality?

Agreed. The Women’s Works Cup has the same amount of competitiveness as Concacaf qualifying. Put the US men against Montserrat (pretty equal to Thailand) and the men win by some stupid score as well.

Every argument I’ve seen conveniently leaves out facts to skew the numbers towards the women while also trashing the men.

I find it unfair that our men’s team is getting trashed when they face much steeper competition and as a whole have some pretty good success. Makes me find our women’s team (or their supporters at least) unlikeable in a way.

College aged men players also have a lot more options outside of college than women do.

Girls can get football scholarships I'm fairly certain.

Remember the LSU girl who tried to get on as a kicker a few years back?

Title IX is one of those things that sounds perfectly logical and reasonable in theory but in practicality is not. The smaller men’s sports suffer greatly under title IX, greatly reduces scholarships causes many schools not to even half men’s soccer programs and other similar men’s programs. The men’s programs that do exist mostly can only offer partial scholarships

ETA- Also in regards to the football argument, football teams are huge revenue earners that help pay for all the women’s sports which almost all operate at a loss with little to no revenue brought in

Are you referring to pro and semi-pro teams? Because they kinda makes the point there is a much bigger appetite for men’s soccer than women’s. That’s free market. I’m strictly talking about the one place where the government has a choice to make it “equal”

Exactly. Arkansas only has one division 1 program in the state and zero D2 and D3. How can we be expected to contribute at all to Men’s soccer in this country if there aren’t even options to play in your own state.

Only two men’s teams in Louisiana are Louisiana College (D3) and Centenary (D3)

That’s what I thought, and I believe division 3 schools don’t offer athletic scholarships

The government only cares about total opportunities. You can't force schools to have every sport.

The argument put forth by the USWNT isn’t doing them any favors. If it was focused on giving them more revenue based on ticket sales and saying based on our success and the numbers we deserve more most people would be behind it. But coming out of the gates with we should be paid on the same level as them resulted in them losing a lot of people who probably would have supported them.

It’s not but honestly I’m not up in arms over it
Rather my school spend more on football

Which also is one of only 2 sec schools to have a men’s soccer team

Football and men’s basketball are basically the only two sports that pay for entire athletic programs

But couldn’t you say it also gained them supporters who wouldn’t have as well because of this?

A lot more SJW/Feminist type who couldn’t care less about sports now following the team
