This site has recommended some great locations for hiking/camping over the years.

One of the recommendations was Standing Indian Trail in NC. I added it to my list and this July I will be headed there to camp, hike, and backpack.

Anyone have any experience with this trail? Best direction to go for two night backpacking? Great tent spots? Water sources? Tips etc?

Camped at campground there but no through hiking, only day hikes. The Albert Mountain fire tower is a must see overlook off the AT. Just incredible. Pickens Nose is also good. you can also drive fire roads to either.

Here ya go. Small sample of our hike. We hiked the Standing Indian loop clockwise to mt Albert and then towards Carters Gap to camp for the night. That was about a 13 mile hike. That would give us two days to hike out with plenty of time to play along the way.
We setup our tent about 100 yards from the shelter. We didn’t want to have to share the shelter. However, No one showed up all night. We ate dinner at the shelter and hung our food bad via the PCT method. At the shelter was a notice about bear canisters now required due to increased bear activity. Bears are ripping down food bags.
Due to this we decided to just hike out the next day and spend the rest of our time playing in the creek at the main campground. We slept overnight with no issues. Windy all night which made for a very relaxing sleep.
We hiked about 6 miles to Standing Indian the following morning. Beautiful views. Then we hiked the 4kiles 2000ft decent back down to the main campground.
Was an amazing hike and camping experience. Plenty of water sources for filtering water. Few shelters along the way. Great views along the trail. The weather was very nice. Cool in the mornings and evenings and warm to hot during mid day. Good thing was once I got hot and sweaty, a cool wet towel took care of that. By the evening I was dry and very comfortable.
Highly recommended.
