Going through their website and looks like I can only bring an overhead item and something as small as a purse to store under the seat in front of me. Would AA make me check in a bag if I decided to bring my backpack with me?

Your backpack identifies as a purse.

backpacks are fine on AA. It's not considered a checked bag.

I've got a rolling Calpak (store overhead) and a backpack. Totally okay for both?

Depends on how far back you are in the plane and if there's space left.

If your backpack will fit under the seat, you are good to go.

As others have said your backpack will count as your personal item as long as it fits under the seat. I fly with American quite a bit and have a rolling carry on I put in the overhead and a backpack with my laptop under the seat.

No. You can bring a carry on bag too. They can gate check it for you if they need. On every flight they ask for volunteers to check a bag as they the overhead bins will be full by your group anyway.

(I fly about 125-150 AA flights a year).
