Canoe/camping trip on Buffalo river in Arkansas. I was probably 15.... my friends dad flew us all up there in private plane. We took fly fishing lessons beforehand, caught some smallmouth bass. Paddled all day, pulled over in evening... cooked our own food over the fire, steaks, baked potatoes.... s’mores. Awesome trip, plan to take my sons when they get older

If the 12 y o is a reader, then he might enjoy "Last Train to Paradise" ( LINK ) about Henry Flager's over-the-water railroad building efforts, scotched by the great hurricane of 1935. Or, you could read it and impress him with your deep knowledge. There is a memorial to the hurricane's victims on Islamorada; 400+ ppl were killed, many of them veterans.
