We went around that same time last year and rented a house through VRBO (it was a great house with a hot tub, but I don't think it would sleep 8 people). Some parts of town look a little sketchy when you're driving through, but then you hit downtown and it's all good. The tour of the Gangster Museum explains why some of the areas of town are run down.
We did the bathouse tour, hike up to Hot Springs Tower, Greatful Head Pizza (twice), Gangster Museum, bath house brewery, Garvan Woodland Gardens, and the Mid America Science Museum. We really enjoyed everything. It's a neat little town.
