Spirit is known for this. You should never rely on them if you need a connecting flight but never for international flights. That’s on you.

If they canceled the flight you are due a full refund, NOT a credit. They won't necessarily volunteer the refund, but it's federal law. Contact them and refer to Department of Transportation policy, and if not file a DOT complaint.
