San Diego is a nice trip for an extended weekend. You could do beach, San Diego zoo, Sea World, the big Legoland California is nearby.
Santa Cruz/Monterrey/Carmel/Big Sur area is a great trip as well and probably the most beautiful part of California. Beach activities and can watch the surfers in Santa Cruz, the amazing aquarium in Monterrey Bay, the seals in the wharf area in Monterrey, Carmel is a cute little shopping town with great restaurants and nice places to stay-good base for the trip, Big Sur offers amazing scenery and good hiking.
New York, Chicago, Boston, New Orleans are good long weekend trips with lots of good eating and sightseeing to be done.
If you can find decent airfare, Portland Maine and surrounding towns are good places to start exploring Maine.
Mackinac Island Michigan would be fun for a long weekend
Charleston is another great long weekend trip - beach and sightseeing.
