Flying in to Tampa for a Saturday - Tuesday trip in mid-January. Four adults and plan to hit as many breweries and brew pubs as possible.

Will probably Airbnb or VRBO and need recommendations on where to stay and other points of interest.

What are the don’t miss breweries / tasting rooms?
May entertain fine dining for one meal but usually gravitate to moderate to upper end casual dining and local bars and grills.

Will rent a car and are open to staying in Tampa or outside if those are better options—St. Pete, Clearwater, near Ybor City, etc.

Thanks in advance, All recommendations are appreciated!

Bern’s Steakhouse

Try to get in here just for the experience if nothing else. I wouldn’t really classify it as “fine dining” despite how over the top it can be in some regards.

I love Jai Alai, so I feel like Cigar City is a must. But I will say that there’s really nothing special about the tap room.

Also went to Mad Craft in Reddington Beach. It was near our beach house, so we just walked there one day for lunch. I enjoyed it. Both the beers and food were good.

Best Breweries…

Tampa - Angry Chair. Woven Water, Magnanimous, Hidden Springs, Barriehaus. You can hit all of these in a day easily. All within a 8 mile radius.

Feel like doing some honey wine? Come see my business at Garagiste Meadery. Tell them you about this post and I’ll be sure you get a discount.

St Pete has some really good ones too. Cycle and Arkane would be my go-to.

Food in Tampa

Upscale - Berns Steakhouse, book a reservation now.

Chinese - Yummy House off Mabry

Korean BBQ - Sa Ri One

Cuban/Spanish - The Columbia in Ybor

Deli/Sammies - Wrights off Mabry

Cuban Sandwiches - La Segunda or West Tampa Sandwich Shop

Indian - Curry Leaves off Kennedy near Westshore

Hot Chicken - King of the Coop

Ramen - Ichicoro off Florida

Under the Radar hotness/where the knowledgeable locals eat - El Puerto in Ybor, Saigon Deli off Mabry

I don’t spend a lot of time in Pinellas/St Pete so I’ll let someone else chime in.

Hope this helps.

Whatever you don’t miss the meadery. It’s in an area with a lot of other breweries.

I just don’t get the hype around this place. I thought it was an ok meal, overall a fairly normal steakhouse experience. Nothing negative to say about it, but didn’t walk away impressed either.

I think you have to keep it in perspective a bit here. Just being honest, Tampa does not have the sort of culinary tradition that one would find in a place like New Orleans.

Berns isn’t even the best steak in town. The reality is, it’s the kind of old-school cool that you just don’t find in many other places nowadays. The table service is amazing. The wine cellar tour is a neat plus. And the dessert room is a truly unique experience. You won’t find many better wine menus in the country.

So you go to Berns for what surrounds the steak.

Correct. It's why I stressed going there "for the experience." Place is basically the complete antithesis of every sort of pseudo hip "new American" type place that has basically become the ubiquitous restaurant you can find in every decent sized city in the country and which has become almost indistinguishable, which makes it actually one of the coolest restaurants in the country.

If you are going Tampa and you can, you should check it out. Will it be the best meal you've ever eaten? Not likely. Will it be an overall experience you sill remember? Yeah.

I wouldn't guess anything else in Tampa will be close to the best meal you've ever eaten either. However, I also can't anything there that might give you a more memorable experience than Bern's.

Wiltz and YA summed it up perfectly. My dad and I have travelled all over the country for LSU games and other stuff and eaten at some very highly thought of restaurants but in terms of overall experience Berns might be at the top.

Any time LSU loses their 3rd game of the season I start hoping for an Outback bowl trip since most of our big goals are out of reach. Mainly to check out Garagiste but also to have another shot at Berns.

Wiltz - Thank you for the detailed post, I truly appreciate your advice. Will add Garagiste to the list and work on the others to go to Bern’s for the gestalt of the dining experience.

Thanks to all others that have posted, as well.

Any recommendations on where and what area to stay would be appreciated.

Thanks again!

I’d stick to the Tampa core. Seminole Heights, Riverside Heights, Ybor are all sort of fun.

If wanting to do some beach time you’ll be better off in St Pete.

Wives are now thinking about staying in Clearwater since it seems to be 20 minutes from everything. Any advice on neighborhoods in Clearwater to look at or to avoid?

Sorry for all of the questions, but wife has already created a 2 page spreadsheet and accompanying color coded map of area drinking establishments.

Thanks again!

As generalizations go; in general for Pinellas County the closer to the water you are the better. The waterfront communities in Clearwater are quite nice. The further inland you go things may get a bit sketchy. Overall; I’d say Clearwater is a safe area. I wouldn’t lose too much sleep over location.
