I love the lake/fishing trips as well. But dang... we've stayed at Big Lake Wilderness Lodge up by Ely, MN (about 20 miles down Echo trail for those who know the area).
And it's like... expensive for what it is. Really rustic and not "nice" by any stretch of the imagination, but the price is legit. It's crazy that you have to basically pay to be off the grid now.

We have enjoyed a few cruises (alaska was the best), and are doing arizona this year.
How much did you pay for that Arizona cruise?

We’ve been once—during the beginning of the pandemic crap because we needed to get out of the house and it’s a short drive for us.
The area is beautiful. Lots of great hikes, fishing, etc.
BUT…it’s reeeeeeaaaaaall hokey. Very touristy. Food is just average. And they are building houses everywhere. And I mean everywhere. It’s you, lots of families and 7000 construction workers.
House we rented was spectacular, though.
4 night stay, we left a day early.
Up until the last 5 years I would go multiple times a year to fly fish, and had been going since my early 20’s. (In 40’s now). Well in December I took off for a day trip to try out a new fly rod. I hardly recognized the place. New construction, family’s with their 80 kids and loud dogs, and all sorts of stuff I really wasn’t too fond of.
The place used to be my hidden gem. I would rarely see anybody else once I got into the actual river and began fishing. Just your usual hardcore fishermen their for the same reasons you were. Peace and quiet and good trout.
Now it felt way too crowded and touristy. Just a big turn off and for the first time in all my years out there I also left early. I hear good things about Arkansas and think I’ll start scouting out the little MO and other areas to find some nice and quiet spots.

some of the most relaxing vacations for us are in the Hill Country. Rent a house on a river or creek. We've enjoyed Wimberley alot. We rented a house on the Frio between Leakey and Concan, TX for first of June. Between chilling in the river, Garner State Park, Lost Maples, year round exotic hunting, and good mexican food, what else do you need?

Mountain View Ark any weekend in October. Bring your guitar. Music jamming (bluegrass) on the square. Ozark mountains can be blazing hot in july, august. Favorite time is April 14,15,16. Ozark folk festival. Much music. Check their wesite for details. Stay in pinewoods cabins. Book now. Probably full already.
