Looking for an August vacation idea

This board has never steered me wrong so here goes. Wife and I are hoping to take a 5ish day trip to a non-beach, cooler destination sometime in august. We’ve got a 3 and 1.5 year old we’ll be bringing along. We plan to stay in the continental, US and would like to stay out of major cities.
Obviously, there will be things we’ll miss out on with small children, but that’s fine. I’m looking at the east side of the Smokies, Jackson/Yellowstone, or Whitefish, MT, but open to anywhere else.
Would love feedback from whoever has an opinion one way or the other. I’ve got low maintenance children, but visiting cities has become a waste of money at their age.

Check out the Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine area. Really cool weather especially at night

Colorado Rockies (Estes Park would be good with kids).
Mackinac Island.
It's a great time for the Cascades/Olympic Peninsula, not sure how the kids would do, though.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Interestingly enough I’ve got a buddy from Michigan who always says the UP is awesome. Totally slipped my mind
