Sounds like you just have/had no idea where to go. This year alone, MPLS had six semifinalist restaurants in James Beard national categories, three of which were finalists (e.g. Bûcheron) and not including another five regional finalists (e.g. Diane's Place - incredible pastries and dishes with Hmong influence, which is a prevalent population in MSP).
There's a thriving brewery, cocktail bar and restaurant scene throughout North Loop, Northeast, and South Minneapolis. You just need to know where to go.
