Need Hilton Head Recommendations

Family of four. Kids ages 6 and 1. First week of August.
Thinking of flying into Charleston for two days. I'm a history nerd so there will be plenty to do.
Drive to Hilton Head. Spend 3 days at beach and go into Savannah for a fourth day.
Fly back out of Savannah.
I've never visited any of these locations.
Any recommendations for places to stay? Activities? Places to eat? More concerned about picking the right place to stay on Hilton Head for kids.

If the kids want the beach, Coligny is the best area to stay where you'll have ice cream shops and places to eat right at the beach.
Harbor Town is more what we like, but it's on Calibogue Sound and not the beach. Take the kids on a dolphin cruise if you have time, or at least go for a walk down around one of the marinas; it doesn't really matter which one. If anyone is cleaning fish they'll be there begging for the heads. Might get to see a baby.
I believe they still have the guy singing and cutting up down in Sea Pines by the lighthouse. Kids love that guy, and he puts on a really funny show. You have to pay a few bucks to enter Sea Pines if you aren't staying there, but there is plenty to do once you're in. Probably see deer and alligators all over the place back there.
The Discovery museum is cool, but the gravel paths might be tough to push a baby buggy around on.
Forgot about Fish Haul Park. They're little so they can run out there and pick up some shells without having to work too hard for them.

They may like the aquarium in Charleston.
