Rental Car Question (Italy)

So my wife has the opportunity to take around a two-month sabbatical this summer. Looking at end of May to the end of July. We have made the decision to go to Italy, we've been twice before, but love everything about it, the culture, food, people, and we are both of Italian descent (Sicilian). I have the ability to work remotely so I will be going too. We're looking at staying a month on the boot and a month in Sicily, basically having two bases to travel out of (it's cheaper through AirBNB to do it this way. I am looking at rental car options and the prices are astronomical. I don't think we will need one on the mainland if we stay in a larger city because the infrastructure is there for easy travel. However, when it comes to Sicily, we will definitely need one. Does anyone know of any alternative solutions to the normal car rentals? We've even thought it may just be cheaper to buy a dang car and resell it or just give it to her cousins over there. The cheapest rental I have found for a month is around 3k. Thanks in advance.

I have rented cars in Italy for a week or so at a time. You are right. It is not cheap. I would not want to rent one for 2 months.
It would probable be t better just to buy one and re-sell it. The thing I would do would be to rent for short periods of time when you need a car and just do without one for the rest of the time.

We're seriously looking into buying one. Wonder where I should go for legal/tax advice on this.
