Stay in England and go up to Manchester or even better Newcastle.

This is like going from NYC to NO, completely different culture and everything, like a new country.

Buy a Rick Steves guide book.

He gives tips for traveling on the cheap and ideas for experiencing tourist sites WITHOUT all the tourists.

For example, instead of watching changing of the guard at Buckingham palace, go to the barracks and watch the guard practice prior and then march to the palace.
