Chiming in to say I’ve taken the direct to and from London multiple times and the first day has never been a bust. If it takes you 4 hours to get from Heathrow to downtown London, you are doing something wrong

Definitely don’t need a car. Do the underground/taxis and buses.
In 3 full days, we did a tour to Bath and Stonehenge and all the highlights in London. My only regret was not having more time at the British Museum, more like the World’s attic and not just the Queen’s attic. Incredible if you have any interest in world history.

I take public transport, but I wasn't just referring to the train ride and the walk, but T5 immigration, and all that jazz. 4hr is a bit of an exaggeration, but it takes way too long for someone that's prepared. I've gotten out of Narita and into downtown Tokyo faster than I have in London. It's not like that anywhere else I've flown into in the UK/ROI internationally. It's one of the reasons I hate LHR (I'm *A, so there is bias built in) because I can get out of any other European airport and into the city far faster than I can in London. The only thing that comes close is AMS, because United is apparently banished to land on a runway that is a 30 minute taxi to the gate.
