Full disclosure, I know the author, he’s a friend of a friend.
If you like Roger Zelazny’s Corwyn of Amber, King’s Dark Tower, Doctor Strange comics, and noir detective stories I highly recommend Crosstown by Loren W Cooper.
The story is set in a multidimensional reality that feels like a mix of the Doctor Strange movie, Inception, and a detective story.
The main character is Zethus, a sorcerer who has traveled the Ways from our world to the far reaches of the multiverse. He makes his home in Crosstown, the hub of the paths that lead to all realities and un realities.
Cooper’s idea of how the sorcerer’s powers work is novel and very creative. Instead of casting “spells”, he’s more like an exorcist who uses his will to banish, consume, or dominate demons, fey, or celestials. The ones he dominate become his Legion, their unique powers are used to protect him, heal him, fight for him, and other duties based on the nature of their talents.
With strong references to fairie mythology, Aztec, Science Fiction, and a host of other styles, Cooper’s story has depth, history, vastness, and reach.
My friend and I used to play Everquest with Loren and I’ve talked with him once or twice. I knew he wanted to be a writer but when he finally wrote Crosstown and I read it I was blown away. I thought it was a great read.
Give it a shot.
