14 books, 18 months, 8,000+ pages
Big lull in the middle with books 9, 10 and 11 but man of man, it ended fantastically. That last book was absolutely incredible. I have to now read something totally different. Think I’m going to read Kitchen Confidential then jump back to sci-fi.

My all-time favorite. Amazing continuity and closure despite the vastness of the universe. Even better on the second read

Years ago I got up to the 4th book I think. I plan on reading it after Stormlight wraps up this winter.

Definitely some low points but the high points are high indeed.

I did the whole series on audiobook. I liked it, even the slog parts were fine. To me, the first book was the weakest. And the last three books were the best. It’s made me wonder how good it would have been if BS had taken Jordan’s ideas and wrote all the books.

I’m on book 4 right now. Only thing I’ve ever read that compares to Tolkien level world building.

I cheered out loud at this:

quote:

“You didn't listen to me," Lan whispered. One last lesson. The hardest. Demandred struck, and Lan saw his opening. Lan lunged forward placing Demandred's sword point against his own side and ramming himself forward onto it.
"I did not come here to win," Lan whispered, smiling. "I came here to kill you. Death is lighter than a feather."

I'm on book 9 Winter's Heart right now. A lot of Aes Sedai and hair tugging right now but still enjoying it. I really prefer the Rand/Mat/Perrin chapters to the female chapters.

The first book took me 6 months to get through the first half of it. I just couldn't get into it. Once they left Emond's Field though, it took off like a rocket!

I enjoyed the first 4-5 books immensely, but then the next few felt more like money-grabs as the books got shorter while more interests and ancillary stories were added. These combined to slow down all the stories. After Robert Jordan died, Brandon Sanderson came in to write the final three books and knocked them all out of the park.

That said, if you liked the ending set, check out more of Sanderson's work (if you haven't already done so). There's a big thread here for his Stormlight Archives series (spoilers abound, but usually are preceded by warnings).

If only BS had written the entire series! His prose is much better than Jordan’s.

Rand is generally insufferable in the middle books

The women are pretty annoying throughout.

Mat, Lan, and Perrin are the best

I read the first 3 a few years ago. They were fine, but I was never dying to keep reading. I also couldn’t stand Nynaeve

I actually thought the first book was the best. Probably because it was so similar to Fellowship of the Ring

I’d have never finished them if not for audiobooks

I gave up on 10 or 11.

I didn't think the good was good enough to outweigh the bad personally. Was just never super impressed with it.

I'll pick it up and finish at some point.

Idk if it's just because I'm doing the audio books but I much prefer Cramer's voice to Kate's. I also like the Lews Therin interjections. Kramer has a great Lews Therin voice.

Absolutely agreed! If he had written WoT, the male/female interactions and relationships would very likely not come across as if they are all in Jr High.
