Read Malazan next. I can't say enough about that series. I've read all the same series you have, and I'm willing to bet the Malazan series will blow you away more than all the others.

Start with the first book expecting to be confused. That's part of the fun. What I love about Ericson is that he makes you work for it.

Don't read the Esselmont books until you've finished the entire Malazan series first. You'll want to reread the series anyway just to pick up on all the little foreshadowing nuggets that are all through the early books.

Ok, I'm in the middle of Lamb (heavily suggested on here) and loving it but I guess I'll take the plunge on Malazan next. Glad to see all the recs on here for it and the advice to power through the first book.

Also really glad to see so many fantasy nerds on the new board. Surprising, but I love it

Man, just thinking about reading the various character arcs like Tehol and Bugg, Karsa, Anomander, Quick Ben, Fiddler for the first time...

I will say this. I've reread the series five times now. I'm STILL pulling little tidbits out that I missed. To say the story is dense is an understatement.

OK, you and Baloo have me interested in House of Leaves so it's on order. My obsession is Infinite Jest so in a lot of ways House of Leaves could have a similar appeal.

I cant believe that I forgot to mention Jim Butcher's Codex Alera. Read these while I was in rehab learning how to walk and talk again. I was immersed in them. I remember them very fondly. Maybe they aren't as good as I remember them but they got me through a tough time.

Nonfiction/travelogues

A Year in Provence by Peter Mayle and all of the sequels.

Most books by Bill Bryson. Favorite is A Walk in the Woods.

I read lots of other stuff, but I always return to a travelogue when I can.

A Year in Provence was sent to me by a good friend but I've been putting off reading it until the wife and I can make it to that part of France. We've been to many other areas but not Provence yet.

If you like travelogues and can deal with one that's a bit edgier, The Devil's Picnic by Taras Grescoe is one of my all-time favorites.

Excellent! I have an overflowing basket of books 'in the queue.' Now, I will need to purchase another basket. Not a hardship!

No, they're good. I've read the series three or four times now I think. While the magic system isn't all that novel, the whole tie-in with the Roman "Lost Legion" is pretty damn cool.
