Manhunt by James Swanson
This is a fascinating book.
I have a friend whose great-great grandfather lived across the street from the Surratt boarding house. Both families were devout Maryland Catholics and those people were rock-ribbed Confederates as were John Wilkes Booth and Dr. Samuel Mudd. No one will ever convince me that Booth and Mudd were not Confederate operatives, and knew each other very well.
There are things we will never know about Lincoln's assassination. Every time the subject of Lincoln's assassination comes up my friend mentions his ancestor's relationship with the Surratt family and adopts an "I know something that you don't know" air. I truly do believe he does.

In Broad Daylight (which was made into a decent television film starring Brian Dennehy) by Harry N. MacLean is excellent. A page turner.
