Looking for a story told through the eyes of the explorer. Something exotic and rugged. The book I'm reading now, Blood River: A Terrifying Journey through the world's most dangerous country has peaked my interest. Is there anything similar to this or that fits the description provided that anybody has read?

Conquistador by Buddy Levy. Fascinating story and well written.

Hmmm. Not sure about exotic but I can think of a couple.
There are several books about John Wesley Powell, a civil war veteran who led the first expedition down the Colorado River through the grand canyon.
River of doubt is a good one as well. Covers Roosevelts Amazon expedition down the river of doubt, later renamed roosevelt river.
David McCullough's Pioneers.
