Early America historian Peter C. Mancall has penned the latest in the ongoing series, entitled Contested Continent: The Struggle for North America, c.1000–1680. Chronologically, it is the first book in the Oxford History of the United States compendium but the tenth to be released, and the first since 2017. When it releases only two more books will remain to be published: Imperial America (which is supposed to cover the time period between 1680 and 1763) and Brand Name America: The Birth of the Modern United States, 1896–1929. The latter is getting closer and closer to completion.
The volume is 792 pages in length and releases on June 1, 2026.

The one thing I have noticed about this series is that it's a serious historical study of U.S. history. The historians who are chosen to write these volumes are the best and most accomplished in their fields and thus very rarely do you see an agenda or political spin in these books.
For example, one of the historians who contributed to this series, Gordon S. Wood, came out hard against the 1619 Project. He's a card-carrying member of the Democratic Party but he wasn't about to let false narratives be injected into a period of American history that he is an expert in.
