Riley was expected to be hired. They had a caterer reserved, their bb and mbb coaches following him, and the graphics were already being made.
All of this post hoc revisionism is a sad attempt to save face.
I don't think that is the case anymore.
Simply put- we're talking Notre Dame. You might not respect them, you might hate the favoritism by the national media. I get that.
But, they ARE a major program. One does not simply make a phone call on Sunday and steal their 11-1 coach in a day.
Dude's married, they have been in South Bend a decade. They aren't kids living out of a cheap apartment, they are living in a nice mansion nearing retirement age. He doesn't go home and tell his wife "Honey, start packing, we're moving to Baton Rouge this week", unless he wants a hospital visit that night to sew his dick back on.
He's got to talk it over with her, let her know what's going on and make sure everything is cool. They have to look at real estate here, find a suitable place.
You can say "he's the man" etc, but he wasn't fired, he was locked in and they were very comfortable.
He probably did sell her on the mild winters.

SC must have been impressed with him by limiting LSU to 63 points in 2019.
