What circumstances surrounded the Ron Rivera Departure from Chicago?

"Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports the Chicago Bears have opted not to renew the contract of defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, leaving one of the top defensive minds in the game without a job. The team wanted to pursue a long-term plan for the position due to Rivera's candidacy for numerous head coaching positions and head coach Lovie Smith felt the need to move in a different direction sooner rather than later. Smith will likely promote linebackers coach Bob Babich to the newly-vacated defensive coordinator position."
I remember Rivera interviewing for some head coaching positions and Chicago didn't want to wait around to see if he would go or not so they didn't resign him. Everyone thought it was odd at the time because he didn't get a head coaching gig. I think there had to be a rif there between Ron and Lovie as well.
As far as Haley, I like the NFL experience part, and Chicago always has a good D, so I'm not sure why the bashing.

There are some excellent DL coaches with LSU ties. Miles just does not want an insider on his staff.

The bashing is because many ppl felt the Bears D underachieved this year, and their fans bitched about Brick, which our fans picked up on and brought over here when his name first surfaced. The Chicago media seems to think that the problems are really more on the DC (the Bears have gotten rid of all 3 def. position coaches but not the DC though).
I like the hire, I thought Haley did well with MSU's DL when they didn't have a lotta talent to work with. He also coached LBs under Tenuta at GT and did well there.

That's what I was thinking as well.

Was that when K. Fox was there? That LBing corp was really good for a few years.

Definitely agree with this, even though most rantards here probably still won't give Miles credit...
That's a given.

I am astounded with those of you giving Chavis C+ or B. He is the mastermind and proven and clearly an A pick with Cooper. Brick is an A or B also. This is an amazing transformation of the D staff that Miles put together. A big part of a DC's job is to have the confidence of the players. Ex-TN players would kill for the Chief, and and respect him.

I'm very happy with each hire.

Chavis - in the context of who was available, B+. In an absolute sense, B-. Chavis is only slightly above average as a DC.
Haley - B+
Cooper - A
Some of the excitement over Chavis was catalyzed by the extreme disappointment/disgust over Malleveto. I doubt there would be as much enthusiasm over Chavis had he been selected after the '04 season or even after Pelini left.

Chavis A-(15 years in the SEC, who else has that on staff?) Yeah keep thinking........only a few men can survive in the SEC that long
Cooper A+ I love the hire
Haley B His name is cool, he has NFL experience, SEC experience, and looks like a mean SOB.

I am happy with all of the hires. Haley is the only one that concerns me. Has anyone else noticed he hasn't stayed at one place for more than 3 years, most places only 1 or 2?
I realize that some of that is natural in coaching, but at some point you would think he would have stuck around somewhere.
