Why would him staying not be breaking news? Have you not paid attention at all?

It's because there is nothing "break". All you are seeing here, and elsewhere, is small slivers of fact (at the moment) enhanced with a lot of editorializing, conjecture, and supposition. The most I think anyone can say with strong confidence is that LSU and Florida have offered Kiffin their HC jobs, Ole Miss offered him an extension/raise to remain their HC, and that Kiffin hasn't given a firm answer to any on his future plans. Mostlly because there hasn't been any hard/actual deadline to do so.

That will change at the end of this week/early next week when all three schools will want a firm answer so they can adjust course if need be

My dad's old stomping grounds. I was over that way a lot in high school.

No one in any camp is willing to take Kiffin's word until the ink is dry on the contract. Kind of a red flag.

It feels like there is an understanding between Ole Miss and Lane, and also LSU and Lane that it makes no sense to speak on so that Ole Miss can focus on getting into the playoffs.

Exactly. Everything tells us what will happen. All we are waiting on is an official announcement.
