re: John Chavis to LSU?

i really hope this isn't true. chavis will run the same soft reactionary D we're all used to but it likely won't be as good as pelini's was. i think this hire will eventually be the downfall of miles if he goes with chavis

How would you feel with Chavis as DC and Ed O as DL coach/recruiting coordinator?
Good god that would be my dream scenario!!!
My top choice was Bumpas because I think his defensive scheme is best suited to stop the spread and given that we play Florida every year (and many other teams are implementing versions of the spread) that is certainly something we need to think about. Chavis however is a very good choice and certainly an upgrade from what we've had. He's been very successful at Tennessee even with the dip their program has taken the last 4 years. He's also an "in your face" guy on the sidelines, something I think we need on the defensive side of the ball. I think that's why Pelini was so successful. His scheme sucks, but at least the players play hard for him and respect him because of his "in your face" mentality.

yeah, he's 4th this year but look at the rest of his tenure:
2004 #45
2005 #7
2006 #50
2007 #70
2008 #4
nobody would be happy with that. 3 out of his 5 years there he's actually had a worse defense than this years horrible LSU D

Defensive players at Tenn NOT equal to talent coming to LSU. It's not even close. Chavis is well respected and is not the reason why Tenn has gone down. We could definitely do worse and I would be more interested in who his staff will be.
Posted on 12/1/08 at 1:19 pm to MarlinMan
Another way to look at Chavis is to notice how many defensive players UT has sent the NFL. Especially at linebacker which is LSU's biggest weakness, NFL draft wise.
Posted on 12/1/08 at 1:21 pm to Tigerark
John Chavis would not be the ultimate hire, but who would be? Ellis Johnson? Muschamp? At least Chavis would be a legitimate, established SEC defensive coordinator. I'm willing to give such a DC a chance to improve our defense.
Posted on 12/1/08 at 1:25 pm to Hideo Nomo
If we could also bring in Ed O for Dline and a solid DB coach, I would be all for it. He's been a rock at UT for a very long time. While his D has had a few bad years, it also coincides with horrible offenses.
This year #4 with a #100+ offense is just an amazing stat.
Also on Jim Donnan show in ATL a few min ago he said his sources are also saying Chavis to LSU

this guy is similar to pelini only not as good IMO. LSU fans are going to love the mustang package

tenn recruits much better than you're giving them credit for, look at the number of NFL players this guy has had on his defenses

Its a "safe" hire like i said. Les could do worse, well he's clearly shown he can do worse. But i think we could do a lot better.
I'd definitely love Bebe as DL/recruiting coordinator yaw yaw though.

Yeah where did all of this Tennessee has no talent talk come from all of a sudden? They've been top 10 in recruiting rankings forever and ever.
Posted on 12/1/08 at 1:42 pm to Maximus
They've hauled in a heck of a lot more 5 star players for sure.

Tenn has had some good classes, but their recruiting is certainly not on the level of LSU, Georgia and Florida this decade.

This year UT is 5-7 and in 2005 UT was 5-6. Can anyone spot Chavis' trend in top defense and record here???
BTW, I've never been that overly impressed with Chavis' defense except for that 2-3 years he had that run with Albert Haynesworth, Leonard Little, Shaun Ellis, Raynoch Thompson, Deon Grant, Terry Fair and Al Wilson and it didn't hurt having Jamal Lewis at RB.

Huh?
Albert Haynesworth
John Henderson
Jerod Mayo
Justin HArrell
Leonard Little
All NFL guys and they have Eric "The Fifth Dimension" Berry soon to be 1st round NFL draft pick.
Now for comparison, which LSU D players are doing shite in the NFL?
Laron Landry
Randall Gay
Corey Webster
maybe Brady James

Defense hasn't been the downfall of Tenn's program. Ask any Tenn fan and they'll tell you no Cutcliffe is the reason Fulmer hit the tailspin.

Forgot about John Henderson (knew I was forgetting somebody
I was just saying he did really well with awesome defensive talent and a good offense with Manning/Martin/Jamal Lewis/Travis Henry, but doesn't do that well with average talent like he's had the past four to five years, excluding Berry, Mayo and Jesse Mahelona (sp?)
