trying to see why this guy is such a big deal. He coached at Louisville for 4 years and you see the absolute disaster he left there. He CANNOT recruit.
He'll work... he is a great offensive mind and his system works...
As for recruiting, his name and brand is such now that he'll get good players... in KY most kids who were good in-state desired to go to UK (I lived there...I know) except for a few Louisville city natives like Brohm (Lousiville legacy) and Bush...
The rest of Petrino's better players were JUCO kids or rejects... he was well-known for snagging troubled kids from schools like Miami who couldn't make it or were booted from teams...
At ARK he'll be able to cherry pick from a better state talent-wise than Kentucky without competing with the state school because they are the state school...
He'll do well IMO... ARK always has the things he's not used to having... great O-Lineman and good RBs... If he can find his QB there and get in some speed guys and system WRs, etc. - they'll be good in a few years...

All I can think about is:
What if Les would have accepted that job to go to Michigan last Tuesday like reports speculated?
I think it is a no-brainer to assume that Bobby Petrino would have been a chief candidate to replace him... he is the one big name who was available and we know that now...
I think there would have been a VERY GOOD chance that he would be our man right now had Les made that move everyone reported he was about to make...
very interesting...

You're right Derby. He'll put up points. He just won't stop a soul. Good luck outscoring people in the SEC. Also, if he turns Arky into what he left in Louisville, TROUBLE. By the way, I played HS football in Arkansas and the talent their SUCKS compared to Louisiana. Good luck Petrino, you're going to need it.

LSU looked at Petrino after Saban left and I don't think it went well. From what I remember, the Auburn - Petrino issue was a red flag for the selection committee.

Great job Arkansas...you hired a great coach. This really makes the SEC that much harder.

I'm aware of that, but times have changed... it is attrition right now in terms of top coaching candidates at LSU's level ...just look at what Michigan is going through and what ARK was going through prior to Petrino freeing up...
Also, Petrino has done some things to firm up his record since all fo that a few years back... he won a BCS Bowl game, coached in the NFL, etc...
I think he would at the very least have been a prime candidate and would have been contacted and probably interviewed by now had Miles left last week...

why would petrino scare anyone? the man ran up the register in a conference that cant even spell defense. there were 3 teams just like his in the conference for the same reason. imo, arky just got alot easier.

He is being torn up in Atlanta right now. Players and commentators are getting their digs in on Petrino.
Its confusing. Blank was supporting Petrino but the vocal veterans have underminded him in the press and the commemtators have questioned his control and I believe this has gone on for most of the season.
The Vick situation was out of his control, but I don't think his body of work was that admirable.
I have no clue about what Michigan's problem is. I know Arkansas' situation and the head coaches that have turned it down and got raises are facing more stable situations at their current schools.
Come 2008, the Razorback's football team is going to look like a college student's apartment a week after finals - empty and trashed.
Petrino to Arkansas just reminds me of square peg - round hole and hard times are on the horizon.

I'm not expecting miracles but I don't get why you guys think this is a downgrade.... don't get it whatsoever. That's what you seem to be saying.

Scary thought...Muschamp to Ark? Petrinos offense with that defense would not bode well for other schools...

I'm not saying its a down grade. Offensively, I certainly expect him to be more creative than Nutt ever was.
Just something about Petrino and his past decisions? You know how Arkansans are. I'd generally describe them as being close and personable.
I think Atlanta has beaten him and he is taking the Arkansas job to rebuild the resume and start moving back up the NCAA coaching ladder.
Hope he works for Arkansas while he is there. I was glad he got passed over by LSU back in 2004.

ESPN is saying press conference bottom of the hour on Sportscenter.

What are the thoughts in Little Rock about this hire?
Posted on 12/11/07 at 10:18 pm to tigertroy
the offense will be fine. Defense has always been the question about Petrino, and if he brings Van Gorder from the Falcons with him I think that question will be answered. IF, and that is a big if, Petrino decides to stay at Arkansas long term he will have the Hogs battling it out with us and the alabama schools for the West. Sucks for the two Mississippi schools. Just when they thought things were looking up for them the middle of the pack team in the division goes and upgrades big time.

That If is a big question. If he doesn't have immediate success at Arky, will he be looking to move again? If he has success, will that make him a hot commodity for other teams.
Unfortunately for Arkansas fans, given Petrino's track record of at least looking at other positions every other year, every time a new coaching position opens up, they are going to get blitzed with "Petrino to..." rumors just like Auburn fans hear with Tuberville.
For the Arkansas faithful I hope the contract includes a hefty buyout, or else Petrino's nomadic tendancies will be used against him in recruiting.
