1. There is absolutely no guarantee Riley will make the playoff with Baylor and Ok State (possibly twice) remaining on OU’s schedule.
2. There’s only one other elite job currently open (USC) as far as I’m aware at this time. That school is reportedly targeting James Franklin. So, that’s only one other coach getting locked down.
Woodward can absolutely afford to wait on a playoff run if he’s set on one guy. He can even wait on Tomlin into January if he wants. If that guy is interested, it’s worth the wait because this hire is the most critical hire of Woodward’s career. IMO bringing Tomlin to LSU would be the biggest hire in the history of college football. That’s the kind of legacy Woodward is looking to secure.
Lincoln Riley would be second, but not on the level of biggest hire in CFB history.

No. He cannot. The boosters who are helping Woodward fund his plan, are requiring this recruiting class not be impacted.

Just to be clear, what you're saying is that the boosters are going to insist he go with a possibly worse candidate in December to not mess up recruiting, is that what you're saying?

This is nonsense. Nothing Woodward could do could guarantee this recruiting class wouldn’t be impacted.

If Riley wants to come to LSU for a monster deal then Woodward will most definitely wait for him if he makes the playoffs. He is not going to offer Riley 12 million per year, have him accept and Woodward withdraws his offer because he makes the playoff lol that makes no sense

This is a retarded, short-sighted approach. You get the hire right even if recruiting suffers in the short term.
Ed Orgeron recruited top 5, but performed well below top 25.

Yes.
If we lose this recruiting class, then the next coach (no matter how good he is) inherits a losing record, plus the scraps after recruits get picked over.
Even if we have to drop to Tier 2, but hand that coach studs, its more likely he can right the ship quickly, than with the total rebuild scenario.
Plus, if the recruits abandon ship in December, then you also might lose that top coach you are waiting on. He might not give up his own stellar class, and a chance to repeat for the title.
Woodward will not wait him out. Too likely to get burned.
