you cannot argue with a guy who has had thier defense ranking in the top 10 consistantly

I thought there was evidence to show otherwise, didn't his defense not finish in the top 30 like 2 out of the last 3 years?

Actually, this is how the Vols ranked nationally in total defense the last few years:

2008 - 4th
2007 - 70th
2006 - 50th
2005 - 7th
2004 - 45th
2003 - 22nd
2002 - 5th

Looks to have a solid defense about every third year. For reference, our defense, who many on here consider our worst in memory, is currently ranked 36th.

Yeah, Tenuta or Walker appealed to me because they attack and try to dictate to the offense, kinda reminded me of he who's name must not be mentioned. But I think Chavis will be good with better talent and depth.

You can have Bill Belichick as your DC and if you don't have the horses, you're not going to rank highly. The coach can't make the tackles. That's why a coach's stat resume' isn't always the best, and is never the only, gauge of his talent.

Agreed. Rumored hires aside, I hope whoever we wind up with has some of that same kind of fire to teach our D.

*Much* better news - Chavis >>> Walker. I'd be happiest if Coach O left the state of Louisiana.

Yes. either that or he just remembers how to coach every 3 years.

I am pretty sure Chavis, Walker, and most of the others who have been the day's "book-it, sure thing" DCs will be a great improvement over what was.

Not if he proceeds to spend all his time yanking recruits out of the state and sending them to UT.

I wonder if that isn't part of his negotiations with Miles...

This entire debate comes down to players.

when a d.c. has very good players, his defense is very good. No matter the style.

Bill b. didn't have a good defense last year. same style as years prior. Players got old.

Tampa had a great d, then lost sapp, lynch, ect. took them 3 years to get back to being strong.

Indy's d was horrific, bob sanders get's healthy, it's improved.

When walker, chavis, shannon, tenuta, pelini, or whomever you want to choose, has players their defense works and works well. When they don't, pelini gives up 62, walker gives up 59, chavis is out of top 30. it's really that simple. These cats are good d.c's no matter the style. We need to make sure whom ever it is has players.

O is a homerun obviously. I do like Chavis too. I was damn excited about Walker.

But then I think......if we hire Walker We're prolly looking for a new DC in 2-3 years or elevating O which we don't know anything about right now. Chavis has had some great defenses at Tenn. Contrary to their record this year and the score of the Florida game, their defense was good.

Personally, I'm happy with either Chavis or Walker. Then gimme some O.
