Why would Sexton tell him not to when its pretty clear every school is offering a blank check?

I personally don’t want that in a coach.

Negotiating the buyout if he leaves. Ole Miss trying to make him have a high buyout to avoid these situations moving forward.

This right here. From my understanding, everyone who is signing extensions right now are Trace Armstrong clients or clients of other agents. Sexton isn't telling any of his people to sign anything so Lane can reset the market and get everyone else a huge raise. They would lose their leverage if Lane signs an extension right now.
So it's a protection racket, then.

And state schools are the ones being held hostage.

Its 100% factual. Now he could still leave for Florida or even LSU but that was put into the contract extension which Sexton is trying to get down/negotiate.

we don't know details in the contract extension or promises in the NIL fund. This creates leverage. You create leverage to better your position in negotiations.
Some coaches found their homes and jumped on the extensions because they wanted to stay.
