Have heard the football King say that USM was an embarassment on National TV....2 times. That was hard for them to abide. Bowers was stubborn and would not listen to reason. Think the AD would be in trouble had he not sent JB on his way. Favre will be home in a year or so and will finance anything they want. It is the USM desire to step up a level and replace Ole Miss in the elite of Ms. Could happen. I think they are after a pro coach, but do not know which one. BUT....I will bet it is a done deal. We shall see.

So schools in Mississippi shouldn't strive to be better? That makes no sense.

What, exactly, are their expectations

Umm, let see. Better than a 7-5 record with a very weak schedule. Not getting blown out by Rice at home. Not losing to Memphis at home. Putting more than 15,000 in the stands.

Someone else mentioned it earlier and was right. Once Nix left, the program took a big hit.

And Bower to Old Piss is very comical. No way in hell do they even interview him.

they have fell off since DC Tyrone Nix left for South Carolina. Bower not a fundraiser or a people person with Alumni. they need funds and their fundraising and attendance were off in recent years. 7-5 record with the weak schedule they play is not much to hang on to. losing to Rice is never good.

Don't blame Bower for fundraising.

Giannini doesn't have professional fundraisers. That idiot thinks it should be a volunteer position.

Bower has always been a bit on the prickly side and he has never been much for the booster niceties of being a D-1A HC

Bingo. This is bullshite. The guy has a winning record. Period. He gets paid 600,000/year and is not a coaching whore! he's been there for like 17 fricking years!! OM job came open last time and they wanted to "talk" to him and he told them "no thanks!" He'll compete for the CUSA title almost every year! What more do you want?!! You get what you pay for and then some with Bower!

Here's a novel fricking idea: Instead of firing Jeff Bower and having to pay off his contract, why don't they use some of that money to get some better facilities?!!

And if you had to fire him, why don't you wait until he posts a losing record? I am very disappointed with USM about this and that is the one school that i quasi-like in this state.

he has to market a small program to kids who will be getting offers from two in-state SEC schools.

He gets the rejects that cant get in the other schools
C-USA takes partial qualifiers, SEC does not. He is also a BIG prick! Maybe he's going to Ar-Kansas.

Unless some major scandal is about to break involving Bower, this may be the worse firing ever

Let's see. One conference championship in the last seven years in the worst conference in Division I. He has won one conference championship since Nix left as D coordinator. He went 7-5 with the 118 ranked schedule in the country this year.

Don't say bad schools shouldn't expect much. Boise, Hawaii, Rutger, WV, Louisville and even LSU have all had turnarounds in their programs because of good coaches. It was time for him to go 3 years ago. Nix held him up.

I was at USM when they hired "Bower Power" after Hallman left in 90, as for him being a prick I am calling BS. had several oppurtunities to talk with him and he was always nice and professional. As for him being a good coach, not sure anybody could do much better with what he has to work with (not sure if it is still true but USM used to have the lowest athletic budget of any div 1 school)He has passed up many oppurtunities in the past, remember his daughter was killed in an automoblie accident several years ago and if I remember right she is buried in Petal, MS (about 20 miles away from Hattiesburg) I think this is a huge mistake for USM

Big mistake by USM. He has done quite a lot with the little resources he has been presented with at USM.

After leading Southern Mississippi to 14 consecutive winning seasons and a bowl game in nine of the last 10 seasons, Jeff Bower won't return as football coach next year, sources close to the situation confirmed Monday morning.

Jeff Bower

Bower
Bower had a 119-82-1 record in 17 seasons at the school. He led Southern Miss to at least a share of the Conference USA title five times since the league was formed in 1996.

It wasn't immediately known whether Bower was forced to resign or was fired. The decision was reached after Bower met with Southern Miss athletics director Richard Giannini on Monday morning.

The Golden Eagles finished 7-5 (5-3 in Conference USA) after beating Arkansas State on Saturday and received an invitation to play in the Papajohns.com Bowl in Birmingham, Ala.

USM can't fill it's stadium on a GOOD day. USM's recruiting territory is the scourge of the south.

Everybody thinks its program should be a national championship contender. Poor decision.

not national championship contention, but if you cant compete for a conference championship in a conference with the likes of UAB, memphis, rice, smu, uab, marshall, etc...its pretty bad

my friends up there at usm are all tired of new orleans bowls and 7-5 seasons. winning the conference championship now that louisville is gone shouldnt be too much to ask...they lost to a winless Rice...at home.

USM used to be one of those teams that national powers would put on their schedule as a weak OOC opponent, then once they beat nebraska in lincoln, a lot of teams backed out on them. everyone around there got used to winning the big games and when that stopped, and the 9 and 10 win seasons stopped, people got antsy...im surprised he lasted as long as he did.

someone mentioned not filling the stadium, the stadium is actually being expanded, and i've been to a couple games there that were damn near sold out. when the team is playing well, people show up and stay the entire game...but who wants to pay 30 bucks to watch their team get curb stomped by rice?

i find it quite hypocritical that we LSU fans can bitch about 10 win seasons and bowl blow-outs and usm fans are supposed to be satisfied with a 7-5 record and a week before christmas bowl game every year.

For a program that averages 20k a game, less than good Texas high schools, doesn't pay crap, has crap faciities, was a girls teaching school and was own their third team qb this year what do you expect.

They got more out of their rejects than any team in the country.

BTW the little brother turned down a full scholarship to USM to walk on at LSU in the 90's when they were at there peak with Farve. What does that tell you?
