Might be relocating to Des Moines. Can anyone tell me what it's like there besides being cold. Is the housing market relatively affordable, average rent for 2 bedroom? TIA for all replies!!

My son went to College in Ames, so we have visited Des Moines quite a bit. For a small town, its not bad. Good little downtown area with bars and dining, farmers market on Saturday. Folks are super midwest nice. Having lived in West Texas- run away from there.

The farmers market on Saturday is pretty awesome. Spent a weekend there and had a pretty good time. Walkable town that has skywalks that connect a lot of downtown together.

depends on how attracted you are to the outdoor activities in and around there. el paso itself is a good enough town, very clean and very well run (dont let border-related biases dissuade you on that). obviously a completely different culture there than iowa, not to mention a completely different climate.

el paso also offers crossroads-like access to new mexico, colorado, arizona, etc for a lifetimes worth of outdoor vacation options.

personally i'd choose el paso over des moines, but you should visit both before you decide

Des Moines is a great, affordable city. Downside is it’s sort of isolated and winters are cold. Id choose Des Moines over El Paso and I like El Paso! You wont regret moving to Iowa!

I've been to Des Moines once, and that was during early November and not during the depths of winter.

While they had the standard chain stuff, there were LOTS of locally-owned restaurants for some variety.

It was fairly easy to get around there.

For three days, it was interesting. I don't know how it would be over the long haul.

I lived 2 hours away in Cedar Rapids and loved it. But I'm not a big city person.

Ankeny is a great community just north of Des Moines.
Des Moines is a nice mid-sized city. Good restaurants, brew pubs and great people.

Not the best place to party but a great place to raise a family.

I’d choose Des Moines over El Paso any day strictly based on how friendly the people are.

El Paso isn’t bad but Des Moines is actually pretty solid winters be dammed.

Spent plenty of time in Des Moines and El Paso. I would much rather live in El Paso.
