My wife grew up reading Harry Potter and her grandmother would buy her the books for Christmas. I read them all as an adult.

She wants to redo her Christmas tradition and buy my daughter one book per Christmas. What age should we start? My daughter is 6 1/2. She'll be 7 1/2 next Christmas. That means she will finish the last book at 13.

I don't know that the last couple of books are age appropriate if we start this year.

She was going to get the illustrated version and read it with her.

Exact same situation. The sorting hat just put Harry into Gryffindor on our read through. I haven’t thought about when it will get too dark for her. I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

As a kid I started reading them in 5th grade, but I think I was a senior in high school by the time the last one came out. So I can’t really speak to age appropriateness.

When my daughter was 8-9 she read them all. My son is 9 now and a slower reader. He started last school year and is just now at The Goblet of Fire.

Start around 9-10. Hogwarts students start at 11 so she will be more connected to them. And you can throw her a hogwarts party for her 11th bday

Before they took over reading them alone, I started reading the earlier ones to them at bedtime. They were 6 and 7 years old.
