… doesn’t suffer an accident climbing a mountain in 1975, how do you think his career turns out? Do you think the accident that lead to his signature look (dark glasses, a beard, and a hat) and perhaps changed the tone of his songwriting turned out to be for the best - strictly from a career and legacy standpoint?

Who knows but glad he recovered the way he did

Yes. Very lucky to have lived.

Even after the accident, that was a rough crowd to run with.

All you have to do is look at his recordings and chart success pre and post accident. LINK
It seems pretty clear it changed his life entirely.

His sound was changing before the accident. But to survive that severe of injuries had to change his perspective and his songwriting. Good artist before, great artist after.

Agreed.
I also think the beard, dark glasses, and cowboy hat appearance that he went to to hide his scars played into his new southern rock style than if he had remained clean shaven.
I will also say that considering the gruesome descriptions I have heard of his injuries surgeons have done a remarkable job putting his face back together.
