Looking to purchase my first shotgun. Key points:

99% of the time for shooting clays.
I’ve shot enough to know I want an O/U.
12 gauge and thinking 28”.
Price range under $1250.
Trying to purchase a new gun within 2weeks.
Have my eye on a Franchi that felt really good but never fired.

Main questions:

Is Franchi a reputable option for clays?
Any other tips during the buying process for a newbie?

TIA.

Go shoulder a bunch of guns before you decide

I went through a few yesterday. Browning felt best. But starting point was $2k+.

Franchi is made by Beretta, so you can rest assured that they will make a quality product.

If that's what feels best to you at the right price, go for it.

Franchi is a beretta company, I have shot the franchi auto loader and it’s real nice. That gun will prolly outlast you and outshoot you as well. If it feels decent when you shoulder it and not to long of a stock or to short then all you should need is a couple thousand rounds through it .

You don't want a 28" for clays. You want a 32".

Under $1250 and new is gonna be difficult. Save up a little more and get you a Browning or Beretta (whichever fits the best). Check out Guns Unlimited in Omaha, Nebraska... specifically the Special Sporting Clays O/U. Stay away from the 725. Franchi isn't reputable for clays.

Beretta is the parent company of benelli, sako, tikka, franchi.
A beretta silver pigeon is one of my bucket list guns even though I will hardly ever use it I just want it.

Franchi, Benelli, etc... all great guns. If you are just starting out you might want to look at some lower priced models like a Tri-Star or something along those lines. I have sold 15-20k shotguns to beginners but trust me...your better off starting with a cheaper gun. Under 1250 will be a chore to find unless you go with one of the lesser known companies.

Remember I use to sell these things, Millions of dollars worth of guns a year.

BUY USED.

Outside of hard to get Benelli guns and fancy collectable crap that just didn't interest me, quality used shooters like you describe will put you up a class or 2 in gun.

Benelli M4 is the best shotgun ever made, but not the gun you are looking for. I wouldn't stick to a brand, I would stick to a set of parameters like you have. O/U, 12 gauge , approx 28", $1250 price, and see what is out there. Look at sold auctions, look for estate sales, nothing crazy, you can look local they usually list the nice guns with good pictures. Sure have a group of brands but go for the best deal and a good shooter. Most people hardly put any rounds through their shotguns and the ones who do take care of them.

I have a nice wetherby Orion 12 gauge I’ll sell for $1000. A few chokes. I just don’t shoot it. It’s the upgrade model with silver receiver with ducks and pheasants on it.

This.

Gun fit is more important for shotguns than any other type of firearm IMO.

Why is that? I’ve asked a handful of people and you are the first and only to say this.

I to am looking for a sporting gun preferably over under. Used would be great. What is the best place to find such a gun within 100 miles of New Orleans.
