RIP FIFA - FIFA EA to End 3-Decade Partnership

The FIFA video game will be disappearing after the maker failed to strike a new licensing deal with world soccer's governing body.
Instead, EA Sports FC will be introduced from 2023 after the company creates the final game in partnership with FIFA later this year.
EA has been producing a FIFA game for around three decades and its fond association with fans worldwide helped the Zurich-based organization's brand when it was tarnished amid a wave of arrests of soccer officials in 2015.
For many, FIFA means a game rather than a sports politics institution. Now FIFA will have to search for new video gaming opportunities beyond EA.
"We're thankful for our many years of great partnership with FIFA," EA CEO Andrew Wilson said. "The future of global football is very bright, and fandom around the world has never been stronger. We have an incredible opportunity to put EA SPORTS FC at the heart of the sport, and to bring even more innovative and authentic experiences to the growing football audience."

EA makes a killing with the ultimate team microtransactions; FIFA probably wanted a bigger piece/percentage. EA was dumb to let that partnership dissolve. Haven't played a FIFA since 2016 though.

FIFA 22 is free this month for PS+ subscribers. It's pathetic that gameplay isn't even 60fps at the minimum and the 30fps cutscenes/menu is hard to look at.

You bet your arse they did. Rumor was they wanted $1B every for years to use the name FIFA.

Just look at where the World Cup will be this winter and you'll have your answer on their greed.
The game will continue to be a giant money maker without the FIFA branding. Soccer fans worldwide despise the organization so this is going to be a welcomed change. Plus there's no real competition as PES doesn't have the licensing agreements EA does.

So what does this really change for EA? Was there any licensing happening through FIFA for the predominant leagues like Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, or Bundesliga?
I love PES gameplay but their licensing situation makes the game almost unbearable for me. If EA Sports FC goes the way of PES with licensing issues that’ll be a shame.

Nope, each of those leagues negotiate individually for licensing. The only thing EA is going to lose is the World Cup license, but they butchered it already (2018 was just a small update on the existing FIFA game). This is going to be a big cost saver I'm sure since the only thing impacted was the four letters on the title.

quote:Why? FIFA brings nothing to the table other than those 4 letters, and they want 10 figures for them. This a rare case of EA being pragmatic and a normal case of FIFA being delusional thinking it's the late 2000's with 2 even competitors slugging it out. PES/eFootball is now irrelevant and EA is in total dominance - there's no reason to wire $150m a year down the drain. They can call the game whatever they want, their market isn't going anywhere because of that.

With his passing it's only a matter of time until EA rebrands Madden too. They may shed players in the future because like FIFA their product is increasingly shite, but it won't be due to branding.

Thank god. Hopefully EA loses all their sports deals

I got FIFA 22 for $20 awhile back but it’s not even worth that. The game sucks.

Pretty surprising, but they don't really use the World Cup as a big prop anymore. It's all about FUT and FUT Clubs now.

frick EA. I played Fifa for about 10yrs. It became more and more scripted every year. It's probably the most manipulated game I've ever played. I'll never play it again.
