re: Giants trade DT Dexter Lawrence to Bengals for 10th overall pick

quote:A new deal is part of the trade. $30m+ will be the final damage. The only question is if he passes Chris Jones for highest paid DT
Over 20+ per. Less than what they would've had to pay Hendrickson and younger but much worse pass rushing.
The Bengals have made so many poor roster decisions over the years that I don’t think this one registers though
The Giants have to be over the moon. 12th highest paid DT wanting a top contract after a 31 tackle season is wild. 0.5 sacks and 7 hits? When he’s already below average against the run? Absolute boon to get the 10th overall pick

How is that degree of narcissism possible from anyone associated with A&M athletics?

Could beat MSU...they are also in freefall
In SEC-only stats they’re our superior in essentially every single hitting and pitching metric (including almost half our ERA)
Taking 2 of 3 at Dudy Noble with a team this bad is a pipe dream

But him thinking Evans and Schmidt were going to replace Anderson and Eyanson was the biggest mistake
Unfortunately our ability to secure transfers who could be Anderson and Eyanson this season was directly impacted by the postseason run said players took us on

quote:The regular season was over. It amounted to a 2-game suspension as St. Amant knocked them out of the playoffs a few hours ago
Since when did taking ones shirt off(what violence!) warrant a season suspension?
In a more civilized time a coach would have stepped away for the season out of embarrassment and to maybe get help if he wanted to keep working with kids. But the cool part of him not doing so is the suspension drew attention to his actions and pushed the video to a far broader audience

re: Padres about to be sold for record MLB valuation of just under 4bn
Posted by RemouladeSawce on 4/17/26 at 11:47 am to UltimateHog
quote:Forbes didn't previously include the value of ancillary assets, which for San Diego adds the estimated future value of an absolutely massive real estate undertaking downtown
Also another example of how wrong those Sportico/Forbes estimates are because Forbes in June 2025 listed the Padres at $1.95B
Forbes is now including it in the updated March 2026 valuations, which has the Padres at $3.1b
Pro sports franchises are the definition of scarcity assets. A team’s intrinsic valuation (which is what such estimates are for) and the same team’s valuation if they are the only one (or one of very few) entertaining a sale are not the same. Sale prices will always exceed valuation estimates, and $3.9b represents a pretty reasonable premium following a competitive sale process

re: WNBA Star Erica Wheeler thinks you're all broke losers

quote:As deserved as it is, this isn't realistically possible going forward. Women's sports isn't a business anymore. It's shifted into a social cause and there are too many rich people willing to share the subsidization mantle with the NBA, if not eventually take it over entirely
WNBA will go bankrupt soon enough.
The investments we're now seeing (ownership stakes at $200-500m valuations, $150-250m+ expansion fees) aren't because some funds and billionaires woke up and said "wow, this is going to be a great investment." The people that have been buying these absurd stakes in WNBA/NWSL teams are among the most conservative / skeptical investors on planet earth. They are quite aware of the obvious realities: that WNBA growth is just 1 person, that women's teams will never be good viewing to most sports fans, that its (limited) fans do not make the heavy financial investment of traditional sports fans, etc.
They still invest because even if financial returns don't follow, they still get returns - social goodwill. It's quasi-philanthropy. In some cases, it's as simple as a billionaire's wife wants in on a women's sports team
The WNBA may genuinely never turn a profit, but insolvency isn't possible if there are people with $ willing to continue to subsidize it for clout and tax losses they can use elsewhere
re: No tailgating for the World Cup allowed

quote:Having been to the Velodrome numerous times (qui ne saute pas n'est pas Marseillais), can confirm that there isn’t. The few lots in proximity are almost all reserved and not public, as is the overwhelming case around first division stadiums in Western Europe. Public lots cap at a few thousand spots and those are rare. They’re usually not even close to full because most people bus, light rail, or walk. Car-based socializing has no place in their culture. Even if it did, in most European countries there’s also the whole grill/open flame in proximity to stadiums ban thing, with few exceptions. Germany is really it because they can get by with small grills for sausages, and it’s mostly just Dortmund and Munich because of their lot sizes
When I lived in Marseille, there wasn’t really tailgating outside of the games, but there were Arab dudes set up with their street grills selling various forms of sausage/baguette sandwich.
Bars/pubs/piazzas, vendor food, and rioting with ultras are great pre-game activities. But they’re not tailgating

quote:In fairness you didn’t, OP and similar reports of a blanket ban were BS. FIFA confirmed today it’s up to the sites/cities
I didn't see it in the FIFA announcement.
But even if you want that experience, the overwhelming majority of stadium lots won’t actually be in service. FIFA is using them for broadcast / media infrastructure, fan villages, and sponsor areas. Of the few still in service, many are within formal security perimeters that will entail car searches. And the people who manage to score such passes will be biased against being tailgating professionals

You know, a distinctly American experience that maybe 1% of the incoming tourist population has done and it was one time when they were studying abroad here at a state school
Pubs are not around football stadiums all over Europe? Curious that. Cause it sounds a hell of a lot like tailgating.
But next time you’re Europe let me know how many people you see set up in parking lots with grills playing cornhole
