There Are Careers That Come With A Sense Of Duty

If you cannot follow through with that duty, you shouldn't be in that career. If you work on the gulf coast and are a safety engineer responsible for shutting down a plant during a hurricane, you have to stay behind during an evacuation. It's your duty. And you have a responsibility to follow through even if it means your life. I know someone who did this during Ike. Their family was terrified for them. But they did it. Because it was their duty and more would have died of they hadn't and things got worse.
If you're a police officer and there's an active shooter, you have a duty to act. Period. No waiting around for half an hour to an hour. You act. I hope those officers have trouble sleeping. They don't deserve a good night's sleep. They had the power to save lives and failed to uphold their duty to the community. Shameful and sad.
I'm not a police officer. I don't have that duty. So keep your "you wouldn't have gone in" comments to yourself.

Give me a category 2 hurricane inside a plant over bullets flying at me 10 times out of 10 times.

I need to feed my family though. I thought I was mentally tough enough for it at the time.

I can’t help but think that they had to have been told to stand down by idk who .. you mean to tell me that not one of them would have gone in??
This all sucks.

Are you really comparing a bunch of blowhards in a blast proof building pressing buttons and grilling steaks to someone facing live fire with intent to kill?

That is exactly what OP is doing.

This topic is all my groupchat is about right now. If they were to create a new position that is staffed by SF with experience to react and train their local departments, a huge amount of lives could be saved.
But at the end of the day it comes down to courage. I personally would give my life for any one of those kids. Send me. We need a bunch of you 'send me' mf'ers to sign up for this right the frick now.

Then go for it. Quit talking about it and be about it.

I'm talking about duty. Which should be the most important thing to people who take jobs like these.

The problem is the law enforcement profession has become so looked down upon and so vilified that those type’s aren’t signing up

You sure are acting high and mighty for a guy that thinks the girls half his age that he pays to spend time with him are actually legitimately interested in him.

Then take the plant job and not the cop job.

Yeah and that might highlight the problem. It's a low wage job. Maybe we could attract better people if the wages were better.

That's where you're wrong. I don't think they're interested in me long term as in getting married and starting a family.

The fact is a lot of people don’t function well or think clearly under stress.I saw that when I started in ICU out of nursing school. We practiced resuscitating patients in cardiac arrest, defibrillating them etc.I did well in practice, giving appropriate drugs, etc. First time it happened for real my mind went blank and my performance was nothing to brag about.Second time I did much better, after about the third time it became a routine.
Almost all new nurses go through same thing, after a couple times they function well.A few ,even after years ,couldn’t function well in an emergency
In the military, not a lot of soldiers walking around with Medal of Honors,Silver Stars.
It’s easy to armchair quarterback and say what you would do in certain situations but no one really knows until they are faced with it.

It's also a low requirement, low skill, type position. Pretty much anyone can be a cop with minimal requirements to meet that vary by state/town at times. I can't think of another job a highschool graudate could find in most towns that would give them a car, pay for training, provide a government benefit package to, and offer status within the community immediately upon acceptance.
It's also not like it's constantly dangerous and live fire all the time. A lot of the job is paperwork, traffic incidents, and going to meetings.
