I know you can't have this discussion without addressing the 1983, 1993 and 1998 teams, but can anyone make a credible argument for this year's defense being better than any of those?

This is the worst defense I've ever seen. I started following LSU football closely in 1971. I'm pretty sure we never had a defense this bad before then, so I'm voting for 2008 as the worst defense in 115 years of LSU football history.

So, the question is...

Are these the worst defensive players in 115 years of LSU football history? Or...

Are Peveto and Mallory the worst defensive coaches in 115 years of LSU football history? Or...

Both?

NOT THE WORST BY A LONG SHOT-BUT PRETTY BAD-IT'S NOT THE PLAYERS WE HAVE GREAT TALENT-IT'S THE COACHING-DEFENSIVE COACHING IS HORRIBLE

We have 4 & 5 star players back there mostly. CJ, PP and JE were AA's I believe. The D line guys are up there too. This problem smells like lack of coaching and hard work.

Coaching had nothing to do with Veteran Safety Curtis Taylor missing an easy tackle on Moreno's 68 yard TD.

What about the other 100 yards he had?

And that one play alone proves it's all the players and not the coaches? Come on, it's all the coaches!!!

Watch the game again, it aint the players. They are out of place, look totally arse raped and undisciplined. But the talent is there.

And what the hell happened to RJF since last year? He looked more than ready to take over for Dorsey, now not so much.

Yeah it was the players. Taylor messed up on what should have been a simple tackle.

Some of it's there. Need to get more in ecruiting. But that won't happen when LSU fans keep wanting to fire coaches.

maybe the coaches didnt emphasize enough the fundamentals of tackling.

When you put up 38 on an SEC team in regulation, you SHOULD win the game.

That said, this defense has a lot more talent than the Tepper-led defenses of 98 and 99.

I saw some great plays on defense and I saw some incredibly bad ones. This defense seems to lack leadership and football intelligence at times.

On Moreno's long run, why was Beckwith the only Tiger chasing him?

24 totally whiffed on the tackle. Poor technique IMO. Credit Beckwith for showing some heart and good speed for a MLB on that play.

Our safeties are upperclassmen and they make rookie mistakes. Over and over. It is frustrating to watch.

No I do not think this defense is the worst in LSU history. Not even close. Of course there is still time for them to achieve that lofty position but I don't think they're that bad.

They just lack leadership at key positions. Intangibles. We've got all the talent in the world. A roster full of 'combine queens'. Guys who can run and jump with the best of them. Guys who just look like NFL players, all over the field on our defense. In the end it takes more than pure physical talent to win consistently.

I still believe in LM and think that he will get it figured out. If he doesn't? Well it wouldn't be the first time for those of us who have been following the Tigers for more than 8 years. I'll still be watching, still sporting my LSU gear, and still be rooting for the Tigers no matter what happens.

This is a good point. Taylor has been going for the HIGHLIGHT REEL hit all year instead of Wrapping up!!!

Coleman as well-looking to make ESPN's Top 10 instead of wrapping up. Lineman and linebackers consistently MIA on running plays. ZERO pressure against a rookie-laden OL that $atin's Gumps totally had their way with. The CB's have really been better than I thought-wish Eugene had not slipped on the long ball. Have not seen the replay to know if he would have stopped it or not. Safeties are constantly out of position, and even when the scheme has them in the right place, they don't react properly. I also sense a lack of leadership.

If you have 2 defensive coordinators you have none.

Anybody stop to think that some of the defensive problems are because the offense has sputtered and turned the ball over in key situations? Seems pretty obvious to me. Definitely some of the best hard hitting players, but the coordinator situation needs to get sorted out. I think it may be too much to ask coaches to be both position coaches and be responsible for the overall defense. Need 1 coordinator to oversee them.
