My 12 year old is playing Middle School golf this spring. We have weekly matches on Saturday. Yesterday on the first tee I told my players to exchange cards with the opponents. The coach for the other team said don’t worry about that everyone keep all the scores. So we get done and half the scores are wrong cause the kids got names confused and it was too much info. None of the kids could sign their cards cause it wasn’t clear who,the scorer and player was. One of the groups turned in a card that was barely legible and the scores were not added up. This is 6-8th grade.

The golf coach needs to actually do his job in my opinion. He is doing a disservice to these kids and being lazy. One of the most important things a young golfer can learn early on is how to keep score properly. Each player should swap scorecards and record the score at the end of each hole. I've seen it where a kid will ask what did you shoot on that hole two back and they cannot remember or don't say it correctly. Don't be afraid to step in if the coach won't do it. Tell the kids you are an avid golfer, and this is what golfers do during tournaments from middle school all the way up through the pros. That's why most scorecards have a place for scorer and attester. When I was the golf booster for my son's team, I wouldn't let the players leave the last green until everyone agreed with their score and they had two signatures on the card.

So we are parent volunteers coaching. The HS coaches work with the kids during the week. We are responsible for giving the cards to the HS coaches. If the HS coaches don’t say anything at practice this week or send an email I’m gonna ask why. Mind you our best player on the HS team last year was DQd for signing an incorrect card. Causing both him and the team from going to State.

Yeah that shouldn’t happen at any level. All a part of the game.

If it’s a threesome, switch cards around so everyone keeps 1 score of another player.

When I played HS golf we all kept score and one guy was designated the official scorecard holder. His score card was the one turned in and the others matched up at the end of the round. After each hole we gathered and said what we had on the hole. I can’t remember any instances of issues.

This was standard for every tournament I ever played in HS.

Sent a text to one of the HS coaches about this. His reply was well sometimes the kids make it hard to exchange cards. Sounds like Airbus nailed it they are lazy. We paid $400 for this program and I still have to pay the green fee for matches. I’m pretty pissed too,get such a nonchalant response. I am gonna ask face to face at practice if this is about player development or just a participation award situation.

Here's a little info for you, for the most part, High School Coaches aren't worth a damn. The only one I know of with any real tournament experience is Meredith Duncan at Byrd High School in Shreveport, former US Amateur winner and LPGA tour player, she knows what she's talking about. The rest are mostly coaching for the extra money and don't actually know golf, wrestling, volleyball, bowling, swimming etc... so don't go into High School thinking your going to receive golf lessons or strategies, it ain't happening. For the record, my son is a Soph and plays golf for his school.

That's the problem. If you are gonna sign up to be a coach, at least try to help the kids out. I know most golf coaches in high school are probably not good golfers and cannot really give good swing advice, but at least try and teach them the basics of good golf etiquette and sportsmanship. If you are gonna spend 2-2/12 hours each afternoon with the team, try and let them learn at least one thing at each practice. That may be as easy as how to rake a bunker or properly fix a ball mark.

Here in lies the problem, there is no 2 1/2 hour after school practice for the majority of high school teams. We had 2 after school practices and we had to pay the green fee to play, luckily we had the Youth on Course app and only had to pay $5.00. All of the practices we got were on our own with out instruction. There are a few teams that have Golf PE but mostly all of the training and practice is on your own. It's not like Football, Basketball or Baseball where for the most part, the Coaches played in College, or at least in high school. All of the fridge sports like golf, wrestling, tennis, volleyball, etc... most of the coaches have never played or even participated in the sport. Most golf coaches have played golf but they are just hacks like us regular people, they don't know swing mechanics or course strategies. Our Coach comes to the tournaments and stops to asks me how he's doing and then drives off, I'm not supposed to help my kid but I do. He's a nice guy but really has little to no interest to make the program better. Not every HS team and Coach are like this but the vast majority are.

When I played in HS there was usually a parent or two with each foursome that went out. Parents were in carts so they could easily get to us if we needed a ruling or clarification on any issue during a match. Parents would also keep our scores and we could cross reference their scorecard with our personal scores throughout the round.

So about two years ago the HS Golf coaches and some boosters raised a pile of money. They have an entire indoor golf studio with trackman, putting green, chipping green and simulator bay. The last time either team made the state tournament was over 5 years ago. They have everything to build a winner. Except decent coaches.
