in the following season?

I'm sure it has happened before. It must have...I hope. But I can't think of an example offhand.

Anyone?

Florida was unranked last season? Huh, I didn't remember that. After the UGA game?

Or are you talking about 1997?

Florida finished 13 in AP and 16 in Coaches in 2006 with a 9 and 4 record.

hopefully LSU can get to 9 and 4 and in the top 25 then the question is moot

I just looked it up. As I suspected, Florida was never unranked in 2007. They fell as far as #20 in the AP, but they were never out of the rankings.

Nor were they unranked in 1997 when they lost only two games.

So, again, when is the last time that a defending national champion was unranked in the following season?

Posted this last night ... Since the BCS began, no defending National Champion has been unranked after the last regular season game. Texas was #19 before the bowls in 2006.

1998: Tennessee
1999: #5 in BCS; 9-3, Fiesta Bowl loss to Nebraska (Tee Martin, Sr)

1999: Florida State
2000: #2 in BCS; 11-2, Orange Bowl loss to Oklahoma (Chris Weinke, Sr)

2000: Oklahoma
2001: #11 in BCS; 11-2, Cotton Bowl victory over Arkansas (Jason White, RSSoph/Nate Hybl, Jr)

2001: Miami
2002: #1 in BCS; 12-1, Fiesta Bowl loss to Ohio State (Ken Dorsey, Sr)

2002: Ohio State
2003: #6 in BCS; 11-2, Fiesta Bowl victory over Kansas State (Craig Krenzel, Sr)

2003: LSU
2004: #12 in BCS; 9-3: Capital One Bowl loss to Iowa (Marcus Randall, Sr/JaMarcus Russell, RSF)

2004: USC
2005: #1 in BCS; 12-1: Rose Bowl loss to Texas (Matt Leinart, Sr)

2005: Texas
2006: #19 in BCS; 10-3: Alamo Bowl victory over Iowa (Colt McCoy, RS Freshman)

2006: Florida
2007: #12 in BCS; 9-4: Capital One Bowl loss to Michigan (Tim Tebow, Soph)

All of them, with the exception of Texas didn't have to start a QB with no college gametime experience. McCoy handled it well. I think if our defense was as good as it was last year J. Lee would have fared better. He has put us in some bad situations himself but the D hasn't helped at all. It was 21-3 yesterday before Lee had gotten warmed up. If the receivers catch a few of this passes then his performance would have looked better.

National champion Georgia Tech in 1990 finished unranked in 1991 so I am guessing that was the last time a national champion was unranked at any point in the season.
