Honda mower issue

My Honda self propelled mower is about 8ish years old. It still runs well but the self propelled part is getting pretty weak. Any ideas on how I can make it better?

Tell your boyfriend to push harder.
Sorry, I had to. Too many things can go bad over 8 years that can be replaced/fixed, so too much to type out. I had the belt go out before, but it wouldn’t self propel at all.
Here’s a quick YT video of some things to look for: LINK

I had an issue where my gravely was full of caked on grass around the drive belt. When you pulled the leaver engine wanted to stall. Cleaned it and it ran fine for another season.

New belt might help if this one is a little loose. Nothing else mechnically would make it "weak" except a loose/slipping belt.

Same happened to mine. It's about 5 years old. I replaced the belt and no difference. There's an adjustment on the cable for the self propel which should fix it. It's on the left side of the handle about halfway down. Need 2 wrenches to loosen and adjust.

Slick drive wheels will as well. Need tread to get traction.

Thanks, I will give that a try.

Get a new drive belt.
This was my first thought but I wanted to make sure there wasn't something that I hadn't thought of. I will try the previous reply first and if it doesn't help I will change the belt. Thanks.

Take it to a small engine repair shop. Unless it’s still under warranty.. I had the same issue with my Briggs and Stratton mower and the certified repair shop told me it was a wheel issue.

I just repaired a honda mower with the same issue. Simple cable tightening. They do stretch.

I have a little honda HRR like many others. I just bought an entire new transmission, belt, and drive wheels for a little over $125. The transmission gives you new axles, which solve (at least temporarily) the "no roll backwards" issues these mowers have. If I'm going to invest my time into working on something, I try to do it just once....

I barely turn mine on because otherwise you’d have to run with it

Replace belt and remove, clean and lubricate the rear wheel pinion gears.

I had a rear wheel disintegrate so I bought two new rear wheels. Just that had made the engaging and pace of the mower so much better.

If you sometimes cut tall grass/weeds, this can wrap around the drive shaft. This grass can put a bind on the drive shaf causing it to be hard to turn. Clean off the grass and it will turn the front wheels much better.
As posted --- adjust the cable tension or new belt is most likely the problem.
If the wheels still don't turn good, your problem likely is the drive shaft gear box. I had to replace mine a few years ago. If you are handy with a few tools, it is not hard to change the drive shaft.
