For those of you that have been ... is it worth it really? The rooms over the water look cool and all, but i don't really dive (snorkeling sure).

Context: working in Thailand for 6 months starting in late November, so staying over the holiday break. The lady is coming down for a few weeks ... she's vietnamese, so we are hitting her country for 10 days, but looking for an actual Christmas eve/day etc getaway from Bangkok beforehand. I get the feeling a trip down to the Thai islands (krabi, phi phi etc) might be just as good and easier.

Any Maldives insight is appreciated.

You can do that in Jamaica and not have to travel for 30 hours to get there.

Eta just saw you will already be in Asia. Someone here recently visited the Maldives and did an incredible review/write up.

Incredible time at JW Maldives. It was our honeymoon. I’ll never go back bc the travel experience was brutal.

If you have direct flights to Male from Thailand, which I assume you do, absolutely go for it.

If you're already in Thailand it may be worth the trip. We went as part of our honeymoon (32 hours of travel to get there) and while we enjoyed it, we don't see any reason to go back.

Here's the full writeup from our trip

No problem. We stayed at the Westin and IIRC the seaplane transfer to/from Male was $500 per person

Yep, stairs going down into the water and our hotel provided snorkel gear for free.

Saw rays, sharks, etc. right off the deck

It was definitely a neat experience and something you should look into doing once.

With so many other places in the world to explore I'm not itching to go back. Looking at Tahiti this winter/spring though.

I actually haven’t been to Asia ever (not counting the Maldives and Middle East). Japan is the first place to visit on our list but I have heard good things about Vietnam recently

If you’re already in the area for an extended time, I think it’s a no brainer to experience it at least once in your life.

If you’re that far out, look at a hotel rewards program. I can only speak for Marriott as that’s what I used. But redeem 4 nights with points at Marriott and get the 5th for free.

I went in 2021 and stayed 5 nights in an overwater bungalow for free at JW. Came to 350k points which is definitely doable in your time frame.

For reference, the list price on the room was $1,400 a night.
