CAMERON, La. (KPLC) - Construction began today on an artificial reef some are calling a “condo for fish.”
The Cheniere Foundation and Coastal Conservation Association Louisiana are partnering to build the East Cameron Block 82 Reef.
“One of the things that we’re losing every day is not only coastal wetlands, but also oil and gas platforms, and the actual structure that is the fishes’ home,” CCA Executive Vice President Rad Trascher said.
Trascher said the process of building a reef can be tricky.
The East Cameron Block 82 Reef will be nine groups of three spread out of the six-by-six blocks.
“This was about 18 months in the making, once you get off-shore it gets a little bit more complicated, obviously a lot more expensive, but it is a necessary thing that we need to be doing and the East and West Cameron blocks are really void of structure right now, so this is first of many,” Trascher said.
Amy Miller, the manager of local government and community affairs for Cheniere, said the reef is important because it contributes to enriching not only the marine ecosystem but the habitat for the marine ecosystem.
Miller said the new reef will boost tourism for Cameron Parish by hopefully bringing people to the area to fish.
“We hear that this reef specifically will attract red snapper, and so we’re hoping whenever it’s red snapper season to see all the boats heading out there to fish this reef,” Miller said.
Trascher said work may be completed as early as Thursday morning.

Well, no shite. It's a ghost town in South Timbalier. I applaud their efforts, but frankly it's not enough to keep up with replacement of the structure that is being removed.

They need to be making all of these platforms reefs instead of ripping them all out and destroying all the ecosystems around them.

what is this like 30 miles offshore out of Cameron?
says they are in 60' of water.
I thought our favorite local talker said they were doing these near shore in 20' of water.

quote:No lies there! Its a fricking wasteland...sure there are lots of snapper, but it aint like it used to be and getting worse as they keep removing structure.

THIS IS THE REASON....loss of habitat. The loss of marshlands are a big factor in the recent trout and redfish limit changes. Those lost marshlands are unpreventable. The removal of platforms is COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE....
There are more random pilings and old well sites in the bays and coastal lakes along the entire coastline of LA than there are platforms left in the Gulf. NO ONE seems to care about removing that junk, which kill/injure more people and sink more boats than those old platforms in the Gulf do. Why doesnt anyone want that old inshore junk removed? Because its good habitat for marine life populations. Its popular fishing sites. The same goes for those platforms offshore, but ding dongs in Washington don't give a shite. Oil bad, rip it all out...
