I am heading to Washington on Saturday. I am not checking any bags, I will just have a small suitcase carry-on and a backpack.

I have read where people cam strapped or taped the rod tube(s) to the carry on luggage. I also read that its 50/50 on having flies in carry on, just depends on the TSA agent. If thats the case, I will just bring a few in an old box in case deputy dawg confiscates them.

Just looking for some real world feedback. I will be fishing the Cowlitz River.

I've traveled out of the country to fly fish probably 18-20 times in the last 12 years. I always carry the bulk of my fishing gear on in a travel rod case (Fishpond and Simms both make one). That case includes fly reels, rods, a small fly box with enough flies to get me by if they lose my checked bag, and some premade leaders. I've never had an issue with TSA asking me to check either my rod carry on or my flies. I do always keep my bigger fly box and the bulk of my leader material in my checked bag.

Thank you sir. So it sounds like the flies themselves are not an issue being in a checked bag?

Ive flown with fly rod attached to carry on no problem. I have a backpack with loops on the outside which I can tighten around the rod tube. Since the rod tube is longer than the backpack I usually take the tube out of the loops and throw it in the overhead bin. No one has ever said a word or had any issue. Usually stash my fly box in checked bag. If small trout patterns I doubt they’d make much of a fuss.

For steelhead?

Where at on the Cowlitz? guessing you’ve got access to a boat or paying a pro with a boat because the Cowlitz has minimal access due to private property.

The Cowlitz used to be one of the best rivers in the state. It’s a shadow of its former self unfortunately.

I've never had an issue with a rod tube attached to the side of my "personal item" backpack or a carryon duffle bag.

I have flown with 2 fly rods attached to a backpack full of tackle many times and the only comment from TSA was "Good luck" or "where you fishing". It would be a MIGHTY big fly that would be a problem....

Never fished the Cowlitz but I have heard good things. I fished eastern Washington a bunch and its fantastic if a little more pressured than most of the PNW. Ought to be a great trip.

Thank you for the responses. I have only flown twice in my life and that was many moons ago.

I will be staying at a house on the Cowlitz. I have a 5wt and a 8wt with a variety of flies (mainly geared towards NW Arkansas White / Norfork since that is where I mainly fish.

Not targeting steelhead by any means, just hoping to catch something. There is a fly shop pretty near where I am staying, that will be my first stop.

They are running up the Cowlitz now.

Bring a heavier rod and buy some smelt from Bobs sporting goods in Longview and Google a simple setup for a bait setup for Sturgeon. It’s catch and release only.

Yeah, no problem there. I just carry some on in the event my bags get lost so I can still fish. With some of the islands we fish, if the main carrier loses your bag, you won't see it for 4-5 days.

I check pocket knives, pliers, big flies (5/0, 6/0), etc. and never had any issue. One of my buddies also regularly straps a rod tube to his backpack and I don't believe there's ever been an issue there either.

Sounds like a solid plan. Just being there will be special...catching a few will be a lifetime memory

Speaking of the white river, major flooding going on today in North Arkansas. Some places have received over 15-20 inches since last night

Flew to Dominican Republic carrying fly rod in a case. No issues. They would not let me carry it on coming back.

Just do NOT put a collapsed rod in a home made rod tube made out of 2” PVC and put in your carry on baggage

Ask me how I know ……

I have done this many times, but always checked it. What problem did you experience?

I have a buddy that checks a case he made - 10' stick of 4" SCH 40 PVC- several times a year. I have been on final leg flights with him in small planes and the damn thing takes up most of the space in the thing. He used threaded plugs for caps....I love the idea of TSA trying to unscrew those things.

TSA thought it was a pipe bomb and the ok every single thing out of my bag and swiped it for gun powder residue, gave me the third degree and did not give a shite about my flight getting ready to leave for Anchorage for a 10 day hunt/fish float trip
But all turned out well

Ok I have a suitcase and a backpack absolutely stuffed to the brim with waders, boots, small pack, flies, etc.

Rod tube on backpack (I am just going to bring 8wt), the only thing im kind of fricked on is the net.

I have a mid length nomad that is much longer than carry on specs. I hate to chance it and lose it at the airport so I will just figure something out when I get there regarding a net.

Super jacked. Will follow up with pics/results.

Everything went smooth. Carried on rod in case, reel and pack, waders, etc in carry on suitcase, no questions, no trouble.

I got to fish the Cowlitz behind the house for a few hours Weds-Fri. Caught 1 trout on an egg pattern. Each evening, the smelt would start going crazy so I would catch about 10 of them on a dry before I called it a night.

Very humbling waters, a lot different than Arkansas. Still fun as shite. I dont care if/what Im catching when the background is badass and Im not at work.

We spent the first few days of the week at Olympic NP then moved over to Packwood for Rainier.
