The original Jaws generates a lot of discussion on this board, and rightfully so. It's one of the greatest movies ever. Growing up, though, I think I was exposed more to this sequel and I still have a soft spot in my heart for it.

I like the look of the shark in this film, with the scarred face. We also see more of it this time. The original used the "less is more" approach, but the sequel knew there was no point hiding the shark after the iconic closing scenes of Jaws. This shark kills more people, and it's takedown of the helecopter amazed me as a youngster.

Scheider is great in this. He lends a weight and legitimacy that the other sequels lack. His paranoia and flipping out at the beach, all leading to his firing and aftermath were done very well. He almost carries the movie by himself. Almost.

The big flaw in this film is that Brody needed another character to play off of. It's a shame Dreyfuss did not reprise Hooper, but having someone for Brody to interact with as he battled the shark would have helped.

Also, I would have had a few more of the teens get eaten at the end.

All in all, it's nothing compared to the original, but still worth a watch. What are your thoughts on Jaws 2?

I love it, but the ending where he feeds the power line into its mouth is so overly silly it almost ruins the ending for me. I mean, he literally screams "Open wide! Say AHH!" and shoves it into a charging shark's mouth.

But I love it. I actually think 3 is also good as well, and would be more praised if it didn't have the poor attempt at 3-D shite in it. But the whole aspect of Jaws infiltrating a Seaworld-type water park is pretty awesome.

I never understood how shark movies are scary. He’s the aquaman of villains. Just stay out of the ocean brother.

I saw 3 in 3D in the theaters when it came out in the 80s. I was young but enjoyed it.

completely agree with the OP. original Jaws clearly the far superior film, but for whatever reason, i was also way more exposed to this one growing up. the scarred face, the helicopter getting attacked, the desperation of the kids on the boats - for some reason all of that really had an impact on me as a kid...this seemed like a super serious movie, and i guess that is what it has stuck with me. love it.

good post!

They filmed it in the Florida panhandle, which looks nothing like MV.

They should have incorporated some gratuitous nudity.

I love this movie, had the whole box set as a kid. 2 was a very worthy sequel.

Roy Scheider is the gotdamn man.

Jaws 2 isn't a bad movie, it's a solid fun monster movie. The biggest issue is what you hit the nail on the head:

Not having a Quint or a Hooper character is a large gaping hole in this movie. The chemistry between those three characters elevates Jaws to a gold standard without that we are left with a retread of the first half of Jaws for Jaws 2. And the teen characters are as vanilla as it gets and cannot hold together the movie like Schieder Dreyfuss and Shaw.

On a side note I do love the Jaws inspired ripoffs in particular Alligator, Orca and Grizzly.

It’s pretty good. Nothing can replace the original’s on-boat camaraderie and dialogue but I thought they did a pretty good job with the high school kids. The scares weren’t half bad either. The helicopter scene was delicious

I disagree. True they didn’t hold a candle to the original but for the genre I thought they had pretty good chemistry, enough that you were cheering for them and sad when the one girl gets eaten.

This scene always stood out to me going back to when I saw it as a kid. Like others have mentioned, I seem to have watched Jaws 2 more than the original.

I totally agree. I consider the original the greatest movie ever made. The sequel is far from that, but it is plenty good.

I am pretty sure I saw jaws 2 first.

Jaws it the better movie, but 2 was a lot of fun

I always thought 3 would have been so much better without 3d.

If we’re talking Jaws ripoffs, gotta include the masterpiece that is Tentacles. That had to be one heck of a pitch to John Huston, Henry Fonda and Shelly Winters

All the sequels are bad. Makes it more bizarre that there hasn't been a new terrible sequel since the franchise broke the seal on bad sequels 45 years ago.

one of the biggest (?!) problems with Jaws 3 is that they made the shark preposterously large. the size of the shark in the original was silly, but at least within the realm of the possible - there have been great whites reliably measured at around 20 feet, with rumors and unreliable reports of 25+ footers. so the "that's a 20 footer"..."25" dialogue is not entirely unrealistic. but the shark in Jaws 3 is supposed to be like 35 feet and 14 tons or something like that. i get that in the 80s, the going logic was "bigger = scarier" which is why they did that, but that kind of scale actually takes away from the scary factor in my opinion. the scene at the end with this huge godzilla head shark stuck in the control room just had no semblance or connection to reality, where pretty much everything in jaws and Jaws 2 was at least sort of possible

Not bad.

There's a deleted scene where Mayor Vaughn takes up for Brody when the city council is discussing firing him. I think it would have been a good move to have kept it in the film. I think it helps show that Vaughn (although misguided in the original) had some loyalty to him and was not necessarily a bad man.
