i've got a 1988 merc 25hp 2 stroke on my duck boat. the boat is a homemade 14' flat, 4' beam (ish). its kind of heavy, we way overbuilt them.

anyway i've quit duck hunting and want to rescue this boat from my barn and start using it recreationally...the 25 runs (when i work on it) but i'm ready for a new outboard and i'd like to do without the fuel mixing, carb clogging, etc, plus its loud and pretty smelly. it will push a half load, one person about 35mph on plane.

i'd prefer to stick with merc assuming they still have the shifter on the tiller grip (do they?). so my choice is 20 or 25hp. the 20 looks quite a bit lighter which matters, especially if theres nobody riding up front. its 100 lbs vs 130 lbs. the 25hp is 30 cu in displacement vs 20 on the 20hp.

anyone have either one of these? or any opinions on whether the 20hp will be a mistake?

heres the boat:

I’ve got the 20 on back of my 17’ Gaudets tunnel hull. Mine has F&R on the tiller grip, but the newer models I’ve seen have the handle on tiller. Pull start, would probably go with electric start if I did it again. But it’s been a damn good motor as long as you crank it every once in a while. Even then, just drained the fuel and added fresh and she cranks right up.

It replaced the 25 Yamaha 2 stroke that was stolen off of it at camp. I’d probably still be running the Yamaha if I had it, but the mercury does run better in the marsh/vegetation.

thx

any noticeable/aggravating change in performance or hole shot with the 20 vs the 25? I’d rather the 20 all things considered as it’s not only lighter it’s smaller, but I don’t want a dog

I’ve got a 25 electric start with power trim that I used last season in Arkansas and loved it. Started right up 8 degrees one morning, twist handle forward reverse. Buying a surface drive for my new property this year so will be selling but I hate to. It’s a long shaft. I’m in Baton Rouge if interested. 2500

Have a jack plate that can make up the difference. Transom on my boat is 18 inches.

Not really, could improve it with a better prop I’m sure. The thing makes gas.
