Guy was a rockstar and didn’t even know it.

quote:

Searching for Sugar Man is a 2012 documentary film about a South African cultural phenomenon, written and directed by Malik Bendjelloul, which details the efforts in the late 1990s of two Cape Town fans, Stephen "Sugar" Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom, to find out whether the rumoured death of American musician Sixto Rodriguez was true and, if not, to discover what had become of him. Rodriguez's music, which had never achieved success in his home country of the United States, had become very popular in South Africa, although little was known about him there.

Legit Soundtrack/Album

Doc is a little loose with the facts but the music is great and makes a great compelling narrative and movie.

It's something you can watch multiple times....

And want to.

His music has been on my phone since I saw that documentary, many years ago now. It's really good. The production and musicianship is surprisingly legit.

I actually saw the guy perform a few years back right after the documentary came out. At an outdoor festival in Nelsonville, OH. Practically blind and had to be walked on and off stage, but sounded awesome.

RIP

I thought this was one of those disingenuous documentaries where the subject wasn't as "missing" as they'd lead you to believe. After being taken in by Spurlock, I've shied away from the questionable docs.

Well that’s quite disappointing.

This might be my favorite documentary, because the guy was so humble and didn't seem bitter about not being able to sustain a music career. So it was very cool to see him be a rock star decades after he retired from music. IIRC he remained a laborer, and just did the rock star thing as a sideline a few times.

I think the only controversy about this doc is that the filmmaker suggested that Rodriguez was a complete failure everywhere except for his underground success in South Africa. In reality, he had some radio airplay in several other countries, and gained enough traction in Australia for someone to promote him on a couple of tours there in the late 70s. It was a little misleading, but not a big deal to me because he truly didn't get anywhere in the US, and he really did live most of his life as a humble laborer and activist.
