Anybody shoot traditional bows around here?

Spinoff from my intro thread. I have a recurve that I need to shoot more. Anybody else shoot trad? Any suggestions for ranges near NOLA, perhaps with 3D targets? Alternatively, any reason I can't take a target to some public land and fire away?

I shoot a recurve x-bow so, technically, yes I do shoot “trad”.

Been hunting with a recurve for about 25 years. Built several recurves in the early 2000's and still hunt with them. I am pretty accurate out to about 30 yds. but I'm getting old and don't shoot as much as I used to, especially in the hot summertime.
I shoot in my yard, I have a 20' platform that I shoot from when the season nears. I also do the same at my camp. I don't know why anyone would need to go to a range if they have a reasonably large yard to shoot in. I like the solitude when I want to focus on form.

That's just it-- I live in Uptown NOLA and don't have a huge yard.
I've also been on some 3D target courses that were fun. Seems like there's one in BR.

Go to your local bow shop and ask about 3d ranges near you. They should surely be able to advise you.

I have a vintage Bear 45 pound traditional bow and have not used it in the last 3-4 years. It’s a blast to shoot though.

I shoot trad bows. Longbows and recurve. Used to live in Baton Rouge and there were some decent 3D ranges there. Can’t recall the name but it was on state land. One of my favorite ways to practice is just going out in the woods and “stump” shooting. Not necessarily stumps. Use a judo point or you will lose arrows. Be good to find an experienced trad guy to learn the ropes . I also shoot compounds but to me there is. Nothing like shooting the trad bow. Have fun
ETA: Waddill Wildlife Refuge is the range I was thinking of. ARTAC Amite River Traditional Archery Club is based out of there .l

I would think you could get in some good practice sessions on the river side of the levee in the Metairie area. I know around Rivershack Tavern across the levee finds the river side bare earth and not covered in concrete like much of the levee is in the N.O. area.
Set a target up at the base of the levee, step back to the distance you want to shoot and fire away, The levee will catch any arrows that miss and likely won't be hard to find.
Not sure about the legality of it since the bike path runs along the top of the levee. May want to check with the Levee Board on that.

Welcome to traditional bow hunting.
Been hunting with a recurve since I was old enough to pick one up. I get almost all my equipment from 3Rivers Archery.
Word of advice…… start off with a light poundage. You have to build muscle memory. Work your way up to that 60# recurve. I shoot 35# for bowfishing. 45# for squirrel and rabbits. 60# for deer and elk. And practice, practice, practice

Go out to The Fly and shoot, baw. They have somewhat hilly terrain around there that could help with your practice, plus lots of land. Plus you might see some Tulane vixens sunbathing. And if you want to get really fun you can try to hit a container ship with an arrow as it passes by.

Some good advice on here-- thanks to all of you.
What y'all gotta remember is that this is New Orleans. I could sell some coke to a sex worker while stealing a car and go on about my day, but a recurve in public would easily result in handcuffs.

There is a bow range at the Pearl River WMA shooting range. Nothing fancy but plenty of targets and you'll have the place to yourself. I live Uptown and shoot mine in my tiny back yard. I do have a shed though that is a giant backstop.

Good to know, thanks! I would be more inclined to shoot in my yard if my neighbor's house didn't look right down into it. I'm not sure they're that kind of tolerant. Once my landscaping grows in, though....
